<\/p>\nORANGE COUNTY, Fla. \u2014 Orange County Public Schools safety leaders recently joined law enforcement, fire and EMS crews for an intensive, two-day active-shooter training exercise built around real campus maps and real-world timelines.<\/p>\n
The drill, led by NCIER, guided teams through every crisis phase: initial violence, lockdown, and reunification with parents. By using actual school floor plans, participants could spot policy gaps and update procedures before a real emergency.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing able to come together, train together, using your own facilities\u2026 really brings it home where your gaps are,\u201d one instructor said. OCPS officials called the training essential for consistent, districtwide incident management.<\/p>\n
The exercise reflects OCPS\u2019s emergency-management program, including regular drills and a district reunification plan adopted by the school board. <\/p>\n
Florida law requires frequent active-assailant drills, and OCPS conducts multiple active-assailant, fire, and severe-weather drills annually under its Standard Response Protocol (Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter).<\/p>\n

Training on real campus layouts helps ensure staff and first responders are well-prepared to transition from thinking \u201cwhat if\u201d to confidently saying \u201cwhat we\u2019ll do.\u201d Additionally, reunification planning is designed to ensure everyone stays clear-headed and calm, making student\u2013parent handoffs quick and safe after an incident.<\/p>\n
