ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. \u2013 A crackdown on \u201cSuper Speeders<\/a>\u201d in Florida has led to hundreds of arrests so far, and the new law has only been in effect for four months. <\/p>\n

News 6 started looking into these cases in July, and we\u2019ve seen driver after driver booked in jail for going dangerously fast. <\/p>\n

Since July 1<\/a>, deputies in Orange County have taken more than 100 drivers into custody who were caught going 50+ miles an hour over the speed limit or over 100 mph. <\/p>\n

Numbers shared by the sheriff\u2019s office at the end of October included 35 drivers who were clocked going 115 mph or higher, and some drivers also had children in the car. <\/p>\n

In October alone, deputies with OCSO arrested more than 40 people \u2014 the most in any month so far, according to the agency. <\/p>\n

HB 351, the \u201cSuper Speeder\u201d law that took effect July 1<\/a>, established a new criminal offense under a state statute labeled \u201cdangerous excessive speeding.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Seminole County Sheriff\u2019s Office tells News 6 their deputies have made 43 arrests under the \u201cSuper Speeder\u201d law so far, and 38 of those drivers were booked on a charge for going 100 miles an hour or above. <\/p>\n

This week, court records show two men were arrested in Seminole County after they were stopped for speeding. One man was stopped after 7 a.m. in the eastbound express lanes of I-4 in Altamonte Springs, where an officer visually estimated the driver was going 115 mph. He was given seven citations, including no registration, no insurance, and not wearing a seatbelt. <\/p>\n

The second driver was stopped by deputies on the S.R. 417 in the Oviedo area, where he was clocked going 100 mph in a silver Honda after 11 p.m. An arrest report states he was also cited for not having a license. <\/p>\n

News 6 also reached out to the State Attorney\u2019s Office for the 18th Judicial Circuit and learned they have received 105 cases for dangerous excessive speeding since the new law took effect. <\/p>\n

Those cases include:<\/p>\n

37 in Seminole County<\/p>\n

68 in Brevard County<\/p>\n

A spokesperson provided additional insight on the 105 cases so far:<\/p>\n

23 are now being prosecuted with misdemeanor charges officially filed.<\/p>\n

10 closed with defendants adjudicated\/sentenced.<\/p>\n

68 under review for formal charges.<\/p>\n

4 cases no-filed or changed to civil.<\/p>\n

Of the 105 total cases, eight include a charge of racing on highways<\/p>\n

Looking closer at the 23 cases with filed charges:<\/p>\n

6 cases also included a DUI charge.<\/p>\n

4 cases also included a charge of fleeing and attempting to elude police.<\/p>\n

1 case also includes a charge of racing on highways.<\/p>\n

Under the law, someone who commits \u201cdangerous excessive speeding\u201d can be punished by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of $500 for a first offense.<\/p>\n

A second offense could result in up to 90 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.<\/p>\n

Additionally, a repeat offense within five years could result in the revocation of that person\u2019s driver\u2019s license for up to a year.<\/p>\n
