Investigators allege he was unable to provide the required paperwork and was denied entry into the state.

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumerism

Because the livestock originated from what Florida considers a high-risk New World screwworm area, officials issued a statewide Be On the Lookout alert after denying entry. Investigators later determined Vega had allegedly entered Florida through Georgia, bypassing the agricultural inspection station. Law enforcement officers later located the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop and again found that the required veterinary inspection documentation was not available, according to FDACS.

Vega was arrested and charged with 24 counts of Unlawful Entry of Animals into the State and one count of Resisting an Officer Without Violence. Following the arrest, the trailer carrying the sheep and goats was escorted back out of Florida. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson said the state will aggressively enforce its emergency animal health protections.

“Florida has taken a proactive and aggressive approach to protecting our livestock, agricultural industry, pets, wildlife, and food supply from the very real threat of New World Screwworm, and we will not tolerate anyone who breaks the law and attempts to circumvent those protections,” Simpson said.

The arrest comes as Florida continues operating under strengthened emergency rules adopted after confirmed New World screwworm detections in Texas and New Mexico. The regulations require warm-blooded animals entering Florida from designated high-risk areas to be accompanied by a valid Official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and, in some cases, additional documentation showing compliance with inspection and treatment requirements. Certain animals from designated infested counties may also require prior movement permits or may be temporarily prohibited from entering the state.

The New World screwworm is a destructive parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. If left untreated, infestations can cause severe tissue damage and may become fatal. Although Florida has not reported an active New World screwworm outbreak, state officials have implemented strict import requirements to prevent the parasite from becoming reestablished within its borders.

The case serves as another reminder that livestock transportation regulations have become increasingly stringent as animal health officials work to slow the spread of the parasite across the United States. Producers, transporters and livestock marketers are being urged to verify all movement requirements before crossing state lines.

The charges against Vega are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

A Texas livestock hauler has been arrested after Florida officials alleged he intentionally bypassed the state’s agricultural inspection…

[6
28,30,29,4774,108949,144450,148368,148367
post-365479","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-florida","tag-florida","tag-florida-headlines","tag-florida-news","tag-maitland","tag-new-world-screwworm","tag-rodriguez-vega","tag-transporting-livestock","tag-veterinary-inspection
["GET
