It is our hope that the City of St. Petersburg will similarly reach the same conclusion.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A plan by the city of Clearwater to buy Duke Energy\u2019s Florida electric distribution assets to establish a local utility which was abandoned last week is drawing support from one of the foremost government watchdog groups in the state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridataxwatch.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Florida TaxWatch<\/a> is now advising nearby St. Petersburg to forget any similar proposal in that Gulf Coast city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">TaxWatch officials <a href=\"https:\/\/floridataxwatch.org\/clearwaters-plan-to-establish-its-own-municipal-electric-utility-puts-taxpayers-at-risk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">issued a critique<\/a> of the Clearwater proposal and warned the city\u2019s feasibility study on the Duke acquisition \u201crelies on optimistic assumptions that significantly understate legal, financial and operational risks.\u201d Clearwater officials <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/812021-clearwater-locks-in-duke-for-30-years-as-st-pete-weighs-a-different-path\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">agreed to stick with Duke\u2019s energy supplies<\/a> Thursday and abandoned any consideration for an acquisition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s a 30-year agreement with Duke replaces an original deal that expired in December.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As TaxWatch was critical of the proposal earlier this year, officials with the organization said they were relieved Clearwater officials got rid of any acquisition plan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chpk.com\/safety\/severe-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-808313 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Hurricane-Season-FL-Politics-and-Programmatic-728x90-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFlorida TaxWatch thanks the Clearwater City Council for their wise decision to extend their electric utility agreement rather than establish its own municipal electric utility. This is a win-win for the city, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.duke-energy.com\/home\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Duke Energy Florida<\/a>, and most importantly, the hardworking taxpayers,\u201d said TaxWatch President and CEO Jeff Kottkamp in a news release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While TaxWatch is encouraged by the Clearwater City Council\u2019s decision to stick with Duke and not start their own utility authority, <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/812347-exclusive-duke-energy-warns-st-pete-that-23m-a-year-in-franchise-fees-is-now-uncertain\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">St. Petersburg is considering a move<\/a> that would negate the company\u2019s energy operations in that city and establish a local utility. The Clearwater decision gives critics of St. Petersburg\u2019s study new reasons to question whether the cost of exploring municipal power is justified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kottkamp said he hopes St. Petersburg officials follow the example of Clearwater.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith this decision the city of Clearwater has put the taxpayers first. It is our hope that the City of St. Petersburg will similarly reach the same conclusion,\u201d Kottkamp said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The energy agreement with St. Petersburg and Duke ended July 31.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/beckerlawyers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-774002 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Becker-Print-Ads-EMPOWER_728-x-90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an effort to address rising electrical costs, St. Petersburg is currently spending as much as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/779051-st-petersburg-to-study-municipal-electric-utility-as-duke-energy-contract-nears-expiration\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">$590,000 to study<\/a> whether the city could buy Duke\u2019s local electric distribution system and establish a public municipal utility.
