ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 The most recent list released by the Florida Department of Education<\/a> reveals which books have been removed or discontinued from state schools in the 2024-2025 school year.<\/p>\n

While the list examines removed books from across the state, it turns out only 16 counties actually did so. <\/p>\n

They are as follows:<\/p>\n

Clay County: 282 removals<\/p>\n

Polk County: 53 removals<\/p>\n

Escambia County: 22 removals<\/p>\n

Orange County: 19 removals<\/p>\n

Santa Rosa: 17 removals<\/p>\n

Bay County: 10 removals<\/p>\n

Marion County: 10 removals<\/p>\n

Brevard County: 9 removals<\/p>\n

Manatee County: 8 removals<\/p>\n

Broward County: 7 removals<\/p>\n

Hernando County: 4 removals<\/p>\n

Saint Johns County: 2 removals<\/p>\n

Duval County: 1 removal<\/p>\n

Martin County: 1 removal<\/p>\n

Nassau County: 1 removal<\/p>\n

Volusia County: 1 removal<\/p>\n

These removals stem from a 2023 law (HB 1069<\/a>), which allows parents to object to instructional materials in schools that could be deemed \u201cpornographic\u201d or which \u201cdepict sexual conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n

Part of that law was struck down by a judge just last year<\/a>, with the state pushing to appeal the decision. In the meantime, though, the FDOE is required to reveal annually which books were removed during the school year.<\/p>\n

While some critics refer to these removals as \u201cbook bans<\/a>,\u201d districts have only removed the titles from the shelves of classrooms or school libraries. Students have not necessarily been prohibited from bringing their own copies onto campus.<\/p>\n
