Perhaps no one has a bigger opportunity this season than young quarterback Malik Willis.

Willis is entering into his first season as an unquestioned starter. And if you had doubts about Willis’ starting status, the first two weeks of training camp have probably eased your concerns. Willis’ performance has been on the rise, where as backup quarterback Quinn Ewers has been disappointing while working down on the depth chart. Could a new addition make sense? There’s a quarterback seemingly on the outs with his old team who could make sense. That is, of course, in the right circumstances. Today’s update on Colts QB Anthony Richardson sure sounds like a split is coming.

The fall of Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis could make for a great lottery ticket for the Miami Dolphins

“Let’s talk about Anthony Richardson. The former first-rounder, former top-10 pick who has really, really struggled. Then suffered one of the most absurd and ridiculous injuries of all time last year. Ended up getting into an injury situation with stretchy band before the game, hurt his eye, was taken to the emergency room, was cleared and now is back.

For Anthony Richardson, I think a couple of things, to me, are clear. Number one, I would not be surprised if he’s played his last down of football with the Indianapolis Colts…if he is going to be one another team…the real question is ‘how well can he see?’. And this is something, for teams, that they’re going to have to address. He hurt his eye, he went to the hospital, he can obviously see some…where is his eyesight and how healthy is he?”

— NFL insider Ian Rapoport

That’s…not exactly a ringing endorsement for Richardson’s status if you read between the lines from Rapoport. And it’s no wonder teams have been lukewarm, at best, at the idea of shipping an asset to Indianapolis for Richardson’s services. The lingering and mutually agreed upon trade exploration has been in place most of the offseason. And yet here we are.

For the Miami Dolphins in particular, I do think there’s a case to make for Richardson as a “buy low” opportunity. The skill set of Malik Willis at quarterback is that of a dynamic, dual-threat player. Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller, the other two quarterbacks on the roster, can’t claim close to the same levels of dynamic athleticism. Ewers has been a major disappointment through the first two weeks of camp after three starts in 2025, too.

Many teams pursue similar skill sets between their starters and the primary backup. The Miami Dolphins have generally not been on that wavelength under former head coach Mike McDaniel and they probably can’t be considered as qualifying for that approach now, either. Richardson could make sense as an explosive athlete with a powerful arm.

This is not, however, an endorsement for a trade at this point. The eye injury uncertainty is a tough one. Miami would be well within their rights to claim in on the waiver wire should things reach that point, though. The final year of Richardson’s original four-year rookie contract has him scheduled to receive $1.145 million in base salary the rest of the way.

Trading for Richardson? No thanks. Claiming him through waivers as a ‘no risk’ addition to their quarterback room? Yes, absolutely. Especially if Ewers doesn’t turn on the heat this month.

Miami Dolphins News

Should the Miami Dolphins keep digging for another signal caller this summer?
