WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 One of the most tense moments in the WNBA’s 2026 season came over the weekend when Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington received a Flagrant 2 foul for an incident involving Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham. <\/p>\n
Carrington was ejected from Saturday’s game after appearing to clothesline Cunningham at one end of the court. <\/p>\n
The incident sparked a social media firestorm as Carrington sent a post on Threads<\/a> where she wrote “white privilege” and tagged the Indiana Fever after the ejection. <\/p>\n Now, Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier is weighing in on the incident, threatening legal action should the state ever acquire a WNBA team. <\/p>\n Uthmeier says incidents like the one between Carrington and Cunningham wouldn’t fly in his state. <\/p>\n The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida, because I\u2019ll be charging people with assault,” Uthmeier said. <\/p>\n In a later post about his comments<\/a>, Uthmeier said he should “probably clarify.”<\/p>\n I should probably clarify assault and battery.”<\/p>\n The WNBA did issue a punishment on Carrington for the foul and she will also need to pay a $1,000 fine. Critics have called for further action for her social media comment.<\/p>\n Carrington previously faced controversy for poking Caitlin Clark, Cunningham’s teammate, in the eye during the 2024 playoffs.<\/p>\n On Sunday, Uthmeier also commented on the WNBA commissioner’s announcement<\/a> that the league would be reviewing “what a woman is” for eligibility after two first-round NBA draft picks, Enes Kanter Freedom<\/a> and Royce White, declared for the WNBA.<\/p>\n “The WNBA continues to view the question of ‘what is a woman?’ as something that is ‘complex and nuanced’ instead of recognizing the simple truth,” Uthmeier wrote. <\/p>\n That\u2019s the problem. What\u2019s next, men assaulting women on the WNBA courts?”<\/p>\n Florida has not had a WNBA franchise team in the state for over 20 years.
