Early voting is now underway across Broward County, and voters have nine days to cast their ballots before primary election day on Aug. 18.<\/p>\n
One of the races getting a lot of attention in Broward is the Democratic primary for Florida\u2019s 20th congressional district.<\/p>\n
Saturday was the first day of early voting in Broward County, and was a chance for voters to have their say in a Congressional race that\u2019s drawing a lot of attention.<\/p>\n
“This has been a district that’s been represented by an African American since 1992, when Alcee Hastings was elected in that seat,” said NBC6 political analyst Alex Penelas.<\/p>\n
That history is part of why this race, District 20, is so closely watched.<\/p>\n
The district was redrawn this year, which changed its makeup, and now, ten candidates are competing for the Democratic nomination.<\/p>\n
Penelas said it\u2019s not just about political strategy, but that representation matters to many voters in the historically Black district.<\/p>\n
“It still matters to many people that they want someone that has lived their life, that’s experienced their experiences, to be representing them in Congress,” he said. “So it does matter.”<\/p>\n
And the race is just one of many on the ballot.<\/p>\n
Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott said voters shouldn\u2019t wait until November to pay attention.<\/p>\n
“A lot of the local, very important local races are going to get decided in August,” Scott said. “So waiting until November shouldn’t be an option for anybody.”<\/p>\n
And unlike on election day, when voters have to go to their assigned precinct, they can vote at any early-voting location in Broward County.<\/p>\n
They need to make sure to bring a current and valid photo ID with their name and signature.<\/p>\n
