Florida’s Broward County school district<\/a> could greatly reduce required testing minutes in elementary schools.<\/p>\n

That’s according to the After-Action Report on Instruction, Assessment, Testing and Screen Time Reduction<\/a> released ahead of Broward’s Aug. 11 school board workshop.<\/p>\n

The report proposes a more than 65% reduction in “district-required K-5 assessment minutes,” a 100% reduction in Kindergarten and first grade district-required testing minutes and 300 fewer minutes of screen time in “digital pathway\/testing exposure in early grades.”<\/p>\n

Causes for the proposed changes<\/p>\n

The report cites “concerns about redundancy, screen time, developmental fit, and instructional disruption” as reasons behind the proposed changes.<\/p>\n

According to a memo from the Office of the Superintendent<\/a>, the school board engaged in a discussion “regarding instruction, assessment, and testing, with particular emphasis on reducing unnecessary testing” during a school board workshop on February 17.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, “in response to the Board’s direction,” the Division of Academics reviewed Broward’s “assessment practices” and spoke to “educators, school leaders, parents” and “advisory groups” to “identify opportunities to reduce testing,” while preserving “meaningful progress monitoring and instructional decision-making.”<\/p>\n

The After-Action Report, which “documents” that work, proposes to achieve the reduction by “eliminating or streamlining selected district assessments,” while keeping in place assessments that “directly inform instruction and intervention.”<\/p>\n

Miami-Dade<\/a>: Classes start on August 13 and end on June 3.<\/p>\n

Monroe<\/a>: Classes start on August 12 and end on May 28.<\/p>\n

Palm Beach County<\/a>: Classes start on August 10 and end on May 27.<\/p>\n
