{"id":368270,"date":"2026-08-11T10:30:20","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T10:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/368270\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T10:30:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T10:30:20","slug":"orlando-ice-cream-shop-supports-women-grieving-infant-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/368270\/","title":{"rendered":"Orlando ice cream shop supports women grieving infant loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 On a day when there should have been a party \u2014 her son\u2019s 10th birthday \u2014 Cara Berry wiped away tears as she hugged a room full of mothers.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a celebration, but honored her son in a profound way, as Berry leaned on other mothers who had walked similar paths in life.<\/p>\n<p>They, too, lost a child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam was just a firecracker. He was a bright light. He loved ice cream, of course,\u201d Berry said.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly\u2019s Homemade Ice Cream donated 10% of sales at its seven scoop shop locations to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefinleyproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Finley Project,<\/a> a nonprofit that helps mothers and their families who are grieving.<\/p>\n<p>It was the same organization that lifted up Berry in her time of need after losing Liam at the age of 3 in a home accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLosing a child, you\u2019re never mentally, physically, emotionally prepared for, but through the Finley Project, I found a group of moms who have unfortunately walked the same walk,\u201d Berry said.<\/p>\n<p>The Finley Project was started by Noelle Moore-Fernandez, who lost her child, Finley. Moore-Fernandez said she saw a gap in services for families between the hospital and home after infant loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a one-of-a-kind program,\u201d Moore-Fernandez said. \u201cIt provides seven services to our families, such as housecleaning, massage therapy, counseling, and other things. We also provide a sense of community, as you can see here today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Liam\u2019s 10th birthday approached, Berry said that she reached out to another mother, Kelly Seidl, co-owner of Kelly\u2019s Homemade Ice Cream.<\/p>\n<p>After all, many family celebrations were spent at Kelly\u2019s, Berry noted, and her son loved the kid favorite Cookie Monster ice cream with sprinkles.<\/p>\n<p>Seidl said that she met Liam eight or nine years ago when she asked him to hop on board her ice cream truck \u2014 and was eager to support the nonprofit and honor Liam\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a pediatric nurse, so Liam just holds a special place in my heart,\u201d Seidl said.<\/p>\n<p>The event showed how the Orlando community supports families during both loss and celebration, Seidl said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Orlando has an amazing community supporting those, whether it\u2019s a loss or a celebration, really comes together,\u201d Seidl said. \u201cToday really shows what that community means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berry herself found meaning in the years that followed heartbreak.<\/p>\n<p>She now volunteers for The Finley Project, supporting other families on their own journeys after loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dream is for everyone to just smile a little today,\u201d Berry said. \u201cMy son was just sunshine and adventures and happiness.
