{"id":368717,"date":"2026-08-11T20:48:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T20:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/368717\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T20:48:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T20:48:15","slug":"rare-red-tide-bloom-in-jacksonville-waterway-raises-concerns-about-beach-safety-and-marine-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/368717\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare red tide bloom in Jacksonville waterway raises concerns about beach safety and marine life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 A rare red tide bloom has been detected in Jacksonville near Fort George Inlet, raising questions for people who live, work and spend time along the waterway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Red tide is a harmful algal bloom that can release toxins into the water and air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">It\u2019s caused primarily by an organism called Karenia brevis, a microscopic alga that produces toxins that can harm fish, birds and other marine life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The FWC says while red tide is found almost exclusively in the Gulf, where it occurs from Mexico to Florida, it can be transported along the coast as water moves with winds and currents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In some cases, those blooms can be carried by the Gulf Stream into the Atlantic Ocean, as far north as Delaware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/news\/three-newly-published-studies-reveal-florida-red-tide-blooms-are-becoming-more-persistent-and-severe-with-warming-waters-and-nutrient-inputs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/news\/three-newly-published-studies-reveal-florida-red-tide-blooms-are-becoming-more-persistent-and-severe-with-warming-waters-and-nutrient-inputs\/\">new research<\/a>, the blooms are happening more often and becoming more severe as coastal waters heat up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The FWC rated the red tide spotted around Fort George Inlet at a <a href=\"https:\/\/gis.myfwc.com\/redtidecurrentstatus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/gis.myfwc.com\/redtidecurrentstatus\/\">medium concentration<\/a> and Northeast Florida is currently the only area with positive tests, <a href=\"https:\/\/gis.myfwc.com\/redtidecurrentstatus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/gis.myfwc.com\/redtidecurrentstatus\/\">according to an FWC tracking map<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Medium concentration doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ll get sick right away, but it does raise concerns about respiratory irritation, especially when winds pull contaminated air toward shore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Symptoms to watch for include:<\/p>\n<p>Coughing and sneezing<\/p>\n<p>Burning or watery eyes<\/p>\n<p>Throat irritation<\/p>\n<p>Skin irritation<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The impacts can extend beyond breathing problems. Red tide can kill fish and accumulate within shellfish and clams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">For some beachgoers, the warning came as a surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Belynda Rutledge was about to go paddleboarding near Fort George Inlet when News4JAX told her about the red tide warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cChange of plans. Thank you. I normally do a lot of research before I do anything, and I didn\u2019t even think to research red tide in this area,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s too close to the inlet to have red tide. Are you sure you\u2019re right?\u201d Rutledge added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Others said they had never seen red tide this far north before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cI haven\u2019t heard anything about the red tide being around here. So that\u2019s new,\u201d said Tammy Trump, a beachgoer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe last time I saw it, I was seven years old, so I was very surprised,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Before heading to the beach, check local red tide conditions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">If you notice any irritation while you\u2019re there, move away from the area.
