What can help you save money, water and the environment all at once? Rain barrels.

Key Biscayne has seen some intense summer storms in the past couple of weeks. The palos de agua (pouring rain) have brought down thousands of gallons of water a day (according to the U.S. Geological Survey), a unique opportunity for homeowners.

Local residents can learn more about rain barrels, large containers that capture and store rainwater runoff, at The Key Biscayne Community Foundation’s upcoming Lunch & Learn event.

Solina Rulfs, Urban Horticulture Program Specialist with UF/IFAS Extension will be giving a presentation on what the tools are, how they can be installed and how homeowners can use them to water their gardens and reduce their tap water usage.

The Key Biscayne Community Foundation created the Citizen Science Project to educate the public with meaningful community programming.

The Citizen Science Project’s mission is to protect the natural resources on Key Biscayne and Virginia Key, educate the public about environmental issues, and provide hands-on opportunities to protect local ecosystems.

RSVP is required!
