announced it planned to reopen the case<\/a> against him.<\/p>\nEguileor\u2019s attorney, Michael Pizzi, said his client is also suing the hospital and Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office for \u201cstonewalling\u201d his attempts to obtain surveillance footage and bodycam video from the day of the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have filed a lawsuit against Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office,\u201d said Pizzi.<\/p>\n
Pizzi added that the footage is a matter of public record and essential for making his case.<\/p>\n
Democratic State Senator Barbara Sharief, who represents District 35 in Broward County and has years of experience working in the hospital, addressed the issue, saying safety and security for nurses and staff at Jackson Memorial Hospital needs to be a top priority.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a doctor of nursing practice and I\u2019ve been in this profession for over 35 years,\u201d said Sharief.<\/p>\n
Even though the hospital system has said it has \u201cfour dedicated Jackson public safety specialists assigned to the Jackson Memorial Emergency Room 24 hours a day, seven days a week\u201d in addition to \u201ctwo off-duty Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s office deputies on campus at all times,\u201d Sharief said that\u2019s not an effective way to address this lapse in security.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey need to be stationed in a place where they can get to us quickly if we call for help,\u201d she said. \u201cThey may have been in the hospital but they\u2019re not \u2014 they weren\u2019t situated in a place where they were able to get there quick enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through an interpreter, Wenyou could also reportedly be heard confessing to the crime while he was being interviewed by authorities.<\/p>\n
Both Jackson Memorial Hospital and MDSO have told 7News they will not comment on issues actively being litigated in court.<\/p>\n
