Vallejo or D\u00edaz to anchor Miami news?<\/p>\n
The question now is who will fill Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s role on the local 6 p.m. newscast. All signs point to Vallejo not taking the slot, but rather the young Cuban journalist Javier D\u00edaz, who has been filling in for anchors when they were away and has been anchoring<\/a> the weekend edition of the newscast since Vallejo moved to the 11 p.m. edition Monday through Friday.<\/p>\n Both Padura and D\u00edaz recently shared a post on their Instagram profiles showing them anchoring the newscast. They noted they were both born on the same day, June 16. \u201cGeminianos del mismo d\u00eda [Geminis born on the same day],\u201d Padura wrote in the post\u2019s caption.<\/p>\n Still, the possibility that it will be D\u00edaz and not Vallejo has not been confirmed by TelevisaUnivision, which the Herald contacted about the layoff and news desk appointments.<\/p>\n D\u00edaz, 38, began working in Miami television after arriving from Cuba a decade ago, first at Telemundo and then with Noticias Univision in Miami for the past nine years.<\/p>\n Ambrosio Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s professional partners<\/p>\n Born in Cienfuegos in central Cuba, Hern\u00e1ndez is a well-respected anchor in Spanish-language television in the United States. He began his career in Chicago radio in the 1980s. After moving to Miami he continued in radio at WOCN, Uni\u00f3n Radio and SuperQ FM, the WQBA station.<\/p>\n In 1985 he jumped to television as an anchor at WSCV Channel 51, before it became Telemundo. In 1987 he moved to Univision\u2019s Channel 23 as anchor of the \u201c5:30 en Punto\u201d newscast and joined Univision as host of the shows \u201cNoticias y m\u00e1s\u201d and \u201cAl Mediod\u00eda\u201d, where he remained until 1993. Hern\u00e1ndez then returned to WSCV Channel 51, serving as main news anchor for Telemundo 51 for 25 years.<\/p>\n On \u201cNoticiero 51\u201d he co-anchored with Cuban presenters Leticia Callava, Mar\u00eda Montoya and Daisy Ballmaj\u00f3. When he moved to Univision in 2015 he shared anchoring duties on \u201cNoticias 23\u201d with Alina Mayo Azze, until her dismissal in 2021<\/a>, when she was replaced by Sandra Peebles. Peebles, in turn, left Univision in January 2024 as part of a round of layoffs that affected 200 employees and saw several programs canceled, decimating especially the Sports section.<\/p>\n Peebles describes Hern\u00e1ndez as \u201ca person of integrity, deeply dedicated to his career and committed to journalism and the cause of Cuba.<\/p>\n \u201cAmbrosio has a long career in Hispanic television and for decades has been a well-known and respected face in our community,\u201d Peebles said.<\/p>\n Peebles worked with Hern\u00e1ndez for seven years and both were awarded an Emmy for a project about the tragedy of Venezuelan migrants crossing the dangerous Dari\u00e9n Gap. That award is one of the 10 Emmys Hern\u00e1ndez has won in his career.<\/p>\n Hern\u00e1ndez, who lives with his family in Miami Lakes, is deeply knowledgeable about the news landscape and the interests of the different communities in South Florida.
