The bacteria cannot penetrate intact skin but can infect individuals through small cuts or by consuming contaminated shellfish.

“I may stay out of the water the rest of the day,” said Debra Garcia of Cape Coral.

The Florida Department of Health has not disclosed where the latest victim contracted the bacteria or how the infection occurred.

“I feel like more people need to know. They should know about it so they can make a decision for themselves,” Garcia said.

Since there is no way to pinpoint exactly where the bacteria is present, health officials recommend carefully cleaning seafood and shellfish and avoiding water exposure when you have a cut.

“I was hoping they would just shut it down or put a warning to let us know what was going on,” Garcia added.

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County is investigating the two confirmed cases in the area and assessing potential impacts on local beaches.

DOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
