WINTER PARK, Fla. \u2013 Red light cameras in Winter Park generated more than $3 million in violations during the last year, but more than half of that money went to the state of Florida.<\/p>\n
Winter Park Police Chief Tom Volkers presented an update on the city\u2019s red light camera program to city commissioners Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The city currently has eight red light cameras operating at six intersections. From July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, Winter Park issued more than 25,000 red light camera violations. Of those, 18,443 were paid.<\/p>\n
Those violations generated more than $3 million, according to the city. However, Winter Park did not keep the full amount.<\/p>\n
Under Florida law, a red light camera violation costs a driver $158. Of that amount, $83 goes to the state and $75 is retained by the local government.<\/p>\n
During the most recent year, about $1.6 million from Winter Park\u2019s red light camera violations went to the state, while the city retained roughly $1.4 million.<\/p>\n
Drivers approaching intersections with red light cameras are also required to be warned that the intersection is photo-enforced. Signs are posted ahead of the intersections in accordance with state law.<\/p>\n
For now, Winter Park officials have not indicated plans to remove the cameras. According to the city, crashes have decreased at the intersections where the cameras are installed.<\/p>\n
