Pools, retention ponds and the ocean are everywhere across the Sunshine State, and paramedics say parents should not let their guard down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIt happens in a matter of seconds,\u201d said Joshua Moore, a paramedic at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcafloridahealthcare.com\/locations\/orange-park-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hcafloridahealthcare.com\/locations\/orange-park-hospital\">HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/individual-family-health\/child-infant-youth\/drowning-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/individual-family-health\/child-infant-youth\/drowning-prevention\/\">According to Florida Health<\/a>, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1\u20134, with home swimming pools being the most common location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Moore encourages parents to take practical steps around the home to reduce the chances of a child reaching the water unsupervised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cIf you have a fence around your pool, [make] sure that the gate is always closed,\u201d Moore said. \u201cYou can also set alarms on your sliding glass doors. If your kid goes out and you don\u2019t realize it, it\u2019ll kind of alarm you to let you know that your kid\u2019s gone outside.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The urgency was felt locally in early August, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/08\/05\/missing-jacksonville-7-year-old-with-autism-found-dead-in-a-pond-no-foul-play-suspected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2026\/08\/05\/missing-jacksonville-7-year-old-with-autism-found-dead-in-a-pond-no-foul-play-suspected\/\">7-year-old boy with autism was reported missing<\/a> from his Northside Jacksonville home. He was later found dead in a pond, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The boy was non-verbal and had last been seen leaving his home in the early morning hours before being found near Seaside Charter School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cYou wanna make sure that you\u2019re always keeping an eye on your kids,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Moore and other safety advocates point to swim lessons as one of the most effective long-term protections for young children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Florida residents can now apply for eight free swimming lessons through the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/individual-family-health\/child-infant-youth\/drowning-prevention\/swimmingvouchers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/individual-family-health\/child-infant-youth\/drowning-prevention\/swimmingvouchers\/\">Swimming Lesson Voucher program<\/a>. Lawmakers recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/85\">expanded the eligible age range<\/a> from children ages 0\u20134 to ages 1\u20137. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">To qualify, a family\u2019s gross income cannot exceed 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
