The\u00a0Federal Aviation Administration\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0unprecedented order to scale back flights nationwide because of the record-long government shutdown took effect Friday morning, with some passengers trying to figure out backup travel plans.<\/p>\n

The\u00a040 airports<\/a>\u00a0selected by the FAA\u00a0span more than two dozen states<\/a> and include hubs such as Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles and Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the order. The list includes four Florida Airports: Fort Lauderdale\/Hollywood International (FLL); Orlando International (MCO); Miami International (MIA); and Tampa International (TPA).<\/p>\n

In some metropolitan areas, including New York, Houston, Chicago and Washington, multiple airports are being impacted, while the ripple effects could reach smaller airports as well.<\/p>\n

Airlines scrambled to adjust their schedules and began canceling flights Thursday in anticipation of the FAA\u2019s official order, while travelers\u00a0waited nervously<\/a>\u00a0to learn if their flights would take off as scheduled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are operating today over 6,000 flights,\u201d David Seymour, chief operating officer for American Airlines, told ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d \u201cNow we\u2019ve had to cancel as part of this directive 220 flights today and that will be the same number through the weekend, until we start ramping up. We have been working tirelessly throughout, around the clock, to ensure that we\u2019re minimizing the disruption to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Airlines directed passengers with plans into the weekend to check apps to learn their flight status<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Some passengers scrambled to find alternatives to flying. Hertz is reporting a sharp increase in one-way car rentals. One-way reservations have spiked more that 20% through the weekend, compared with the same period last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe join the airlines in urging Congress to swiftly pass a clean continuing resolution and restore certainty for travelers,\u201d wrote Hertz CEO Gil West. \u201cEvery day of delay creates unnecessary disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 815 flights have been called off nationwide, according to FlightAware. Delta Air Lines said it would scratch roughly 170 flights Friday, and American Airlines planned to cut 220 a day through Monday.<\/p>\n

The FAA said the reductions would start at 4% and ramp up to 10% by Nov. 14. They are to be in effect between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and impact all commercial airlines.<\/p>\n

The agency said the cutbacks are necessary to relieve pressure on air traffic controllers who have been working without pay for more than a month. Many are pulling six-day work weeks with mandatory overtime, and increasing numbers of them have begun calling out as the financial strain and exhaustion mount.<\/p>\n

What to do if you\u2019re facing flight disruptions<\/p>\n

Staffing shortages have caused flight delays at a growing number of airports as disruptions pile up nationwide.\u00a0Here is what to know about your rights as a passenger.<\/a><\/p>\n

My flight was canceled. Now what?\u00a0If you are already at the airport, it is time to find another flight. Airlines will rebook you on a later flight for no additional charge. You can ask to be booked on another airline, but airlines aren\u2019t required to put you on another carrier\u2019s flight. It is often hit or miss.<\/p>\n

Am I owed a refund?\u00a0If your flight is canceled and you no longer want to take the trip, or have found another way of getting to your destination, the airline is legally required to refund your money, even if you bought a non-refundable ticket.<\/p>\n

Can I get compensation?\u00a0U.S. airlines are not required to pay additional cash compensation and cover lodging and meals for passengers who are stranded, even if a flight cancellation or a severe delay is the airline\u2019s fault.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t expect people to go in to work when they\u2019re not getting a paycheck,\u201d said Kelly Matthews of Flat Rock, Michigan, a frequent business traveler who has canceled most of her upcoming trips. \u201cI mean it\u2019s not a matter of them not wanting to do the job \u2014 but you can\u2019t afford to pay for gas, your day care and everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The order comes as the Trump administration is\u00a0ramping up pressure<\/a>\u00a0on Democrats in Congress to end the shutdown.<\/p>\n

Airlines said they would try to minimize\u00a0impact on customers<\/a>. Some planned to focus on slashing routes to and from small and medium-size cities.<\/p>\n

Carriers are required to refund customers whose flights are canceled but not to cover secondary costs such as food and hotel accommodations unless a delay or cancellation results from a contributing factor that is within the control of the airlines, according to the Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n

Industry analyst Henry Harteveldt warned that the reductions will \u201chave a\u00a0noticeable impact across the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0air transportation system.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cuts could also slow package service as two airports on the list are major distribution centers for delivery companies: FedEx in Memphis, Tennessee, and UPS in Louisville, Kentucky, the site of this week\u2019s\u00a0deadly cargo plane crash<\/a>.<\/p>\n
