3 accused of illegally harvesting palmetto berries at Galt Preserve in St. James City<\/p>\n

Three people were arrested at Galt Preserve in St. James City on Tuesday after being accused of illegally harvesting palmetto berries, a practice that requires a permit in Florida. <\/p>\n

Chris Crofoot, a St. James City resident, said, “I saw an increased police presence on Stringfellow, but I did not see any of the chase.” <\/p>\n

According to the Lee County Sheriff\u2019s Office, deputies were called to the preserve after a park ranger spotted reported trespassers in the area. Deputies said Marta Perez and Oralia Mendez were accused of trying to hide next to large burlap sacks filled with palmetto berries. The women reportedly fled into the swamp, and deputies followed their footprints, which led them to Darvi Felipe Anton Mendez. <\/p>\n

The three individuals were arrested and face charges for illegal harvesting of palmetto berries. <\/p>\n

Ann Freaks, another St. James City resident, said, “It was kind of surprising to hear it was just across at the preserve over there. We go in there all the time on our bikes, and there isn’t police activity anywhere on the island, let alone across the street. It’s kind of surprising, but I know it’s illegal to pick those berries.” <\/p>\n

Every year, people are arrested for illegally picking palmetto berries. The berries are known for their drug-like effect on men\u2019s prostate health. <\/p>\n

“I’m surprised that they try to get away with it because I’m sure they have heard of other people getting arrested for this, and yet they’re still back at it,” Freaks said. <\/p>\n

In 2018, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced that a permit would be required to harvest and sell saw palmetto berries in the state. Harvesting without proper documentation is a third-degree felony.<\/p>\n
