Here\u2019s what the law says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 The end of summer marks the beginning of saw palmetto season, where the plant is in full bloom and the berries are plentiful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">However, that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s OK for you to start gathering them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">These plants are considered endangered, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=&amp;URL=0500-0599\/0581\/Sections\/0581.189.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=&amp;URL=0500-0599\/0581\/Sections\/0581.189.html\">state statutes<\/a> explicitly prohibit anyone from purposefully destroying, harvesting or selling them \u2014 whether on public lands or someone else\u2019s private property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Instead, Florida law requires residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Plant-Industry-Permits\/Saw-Palmetto-Berry-Harvesting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Plant-Industry-Permits\/Saw-Palmetto-Berry-Harvesting\">to have a permit to harvest saw palmetto berries<\/a> on privately-owned land, potentially including your own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">That said, the law carves out an exception for people who who legally harvest or handle saw palmetto berries from up to two plants on their property for home or personal use.
