MIAMI \u2014 At just 20 years old, South Florida singer Masha Kova<\/a> is carving out her own sound with help from a music legend who helped define the R&B she grew up loving.<\/p>\n

Kova, a Miami-based singer with deep musical roots, worked with Grammy-winning producer Teddy Riley on her debut single, \u201cBye Bye Bye.\u201d Riley, known as the creator of New Jack Swing, has become a mentor to the young artist as she develops a sound blending pop, R&B and early-2000s nostalgia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a huge 2000s girlie,\u201d Kova said. \u201cThat\u2019s my whole brand.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Kova, working alongside Riley was an opportunity to learn from someone whose influence stretches across generations of R&B.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with Teddy Riley was such a surreal experience,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing in a room with such a legend who has so much aura, knowledge, and he\u2019s iconic. He is a blueprint in music.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the upbeat sound of \u201cBye Bye Bye\u201d came out of a difficult period in Kova\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

She said she walked into the studio at a low point and knew exactly what kind of song she needed to make.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018OK guys, I need a good feel-good song,\u2019\u201d Kova said. \u201c\u2018I need a song that feels like a bop that\u2019s going to make me feel like I\u2019m the baddest.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

While the title may sound like a breakup anthem, Kova said its message goes beyond leaving a relationship behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m also saying \u2018bye bye bye\u2019 to, like, my old identities, my old self, my old friendships, my old habits,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

A musical calling<\/p>\n

Music has been part of Kova\u2019s life since childhood. Her mother was a singer in Russia, while her father was a music producer.<\/p>\n

Initially, Kova wanted to take a different path.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to stand out and I was like, I\u2019m going to be the only one in the family that does not do music. I\u2019m going to be a lawyer,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

That changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, when time alone gave her an opportunity to reconnect with music.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know when something is just your calling, you can\u2019t run from it,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I fell in love all over again. I started to write. I started to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Kova hopes to use her growing platform for more than her music. She has spoken openly about struggling with body image when she was younger and wants her brand to encourage self-acceptance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was younger I really faced body dysmorphia issues and not loving myself,\u201d Kova said.<\/p>\n

Her \u201cBody So Tea\u201d message, she said, is about reminding others to embrace who they are.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to emulate that you are beautiful the way you are and you are special,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

More music on the way<\/p>\n

Kova is already preparing her next release, \u201cRed Light Green Light,\u201d which she describes as a blend of pop and house music.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a metaphor for, you know, that push and pull effect sometimes you have with someone,\u201d she said. \u201cSo it\u2019s a very flirty, sexy song.\u201d<\/p>\n

In September, Kova plans to perform both songs during her first showcase in Wynwood.<\/p>\n

She is also working on additional music, with a potential EP on the horizon.<\/p>\n
