Yesterday and today I reviewed the PFF Grades and spent some time watching an NFL replay of Friday\u2019s game. A different story emerged as a result.<\/p>\n
PFF Grades.<\/p>\n
Quarterbacks. As a group Miami ranked 3rd worst with seven gams still ungraded. Miami\u2019s passing grades is 44. Only Tennessee and Atlanta have worse passing grades.<\/p>\n
Willis had a great passing grade of 90.4. So far that is 3rd highest. Ewers at 51.6 ranked 37th out of 52 QBs. Cam Miller grade was 26 or the absolute worst so far.<\/p>\n
Receivers.<\/p>\n
As a group Miami Dolphins receivers are the worst so far with a combined grade of 47. Miami receivers were charged with four drops. They actually dropped five but the last was not counted because Miami committed offensive holding on the play. Cam Miller was particularly victimized by the drops. As expected, Caleb Douglas had the highest grade at 75 followed by A.J Henning and Malik Washington.<\/p>\n
Offensive Line.<\/p>\n
Miami has the worst pass blocking grade so far at 43.6. The first team was largely OK in pass blocking. The best pass blocker was Proctor with a grade of 80.9. LG Caedan Wallace followed with 79.0 followed by Brewer at 76.4. The worst pass blockers were RT Gottlieb Ayedze who gave up the hurry which resulted in Ewer\u2019s interception. He had a grade of 20.6 LG James Ester had a pass blocking grade of zero.<\/p>\n
Running.<\/p>\n
Miami so far has the tenth best team grade running the ball with a collective grade of 65. The best runners were Achane (81.7), Gordon (73.3) and Wright (64.9). The worst runner was Ewers at 44.1. Inexplicably Willis was given a grade of 50 probably because his slide was a foot short. Completely disagree with Willis running grade.<\/p>\n
Summary of Offense.<\/p>\n
The tale on the Phinsider yesterday was how bad Ewers and Miller looked. The real story should include how bad the backup receivers and Offensive Linemen were. Neither Ewers not Miller were good but they did not get any help from their supporting casts.<\/p>\n
Defense.<\/p>\n
Miami\u2019s defense ranked significantly better than the offense. Even in my first watching I thought tackling was significantly better and their tackling grade was 73.5 which ranked 5th in the NFL. Their pass rushing grade was 67.6 which also ranked 5th. Their coverage grade was 64.4 which ranked 10th and their run defense ranked 12th with a grade of 57.2.<\/p>\n
The top-rated defender was Chop Robinson with a total grade of 90.5. (Only seven snaps). The worst defender was Kenneth Grant with a total grade of 34.8. Neither Johnson (56.7) nor Rodriguez (53.4) ranked well.<\/p>\n
Conclusion.<\/p>\n
The alarm about the backup Quarterbacks which I initially shared appears exaggerated. Before moving Ewers out, I would like to see him get some repetitions with the first team.
