The 2026 season is a year most fans would like to forget. Last season’s shortcomings are the gasoline to the fire that is simmering beneath the surface of the upcoming 2027 campaign.<\/p>\n
To be clear, Sean Sweeney is not on the “hot seat” in his first year. But he is now at the helm of a team with big decisions on the horizon<\/a> and direct ramifications based on the outcome of this season. <\/p>\n The Magic must get off to a good start this season<\/a>. And with eight of their first 20 games being against teams that did not make the playoffs, a good start should be the expectation inside and outside of the building.<\/p>\n Getting the team there falls on Sweeney.<\/p>\n Sweeney has been pegged as a defensive coach, but has also shown to be an outside-the-box thinker on offense with an extreme attention to detail. Everyone around the league seems to believe Sweeney is ready for the lead chair.<\/p>\n But the reality is, he has never been an NBA head coach. And, typically, a coach making the jump from assistant to head coach for the first time is afforded some time for his players to learn and adjust to their new system. They typically take over teams with a lot less pressure.<\/p>\n Sweeney will be expected to have the Magic competing for a championship in his first year.<\/p>\n All signs all summer point to a team that understands and is embracing the challenges in front of them. And everything falls on their first-time coach to deliver this group’s next steps.<\/p>\n Accomplishing that will face several hurdles.<\/p>\n The East Got Better<\/p>\n The first reason Sean Sweeney will be expected to get the Orlando Magic off to a good start is that the Eastern Conference as a whole has improved<\/a>. A slow start could bury the season before it even gets started. <\/p>\n Orlando is not in a rebuild. This is a team that has stated several times that it believes it is championship-worthy as currently constructed.<\/p>\n Championship-worthy teams generally get off to good starts. The last three — the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder and Boston Celtics — all won at least 13 of their first 20 games.<\/p>\n Accomplishing that will be more difficult with an improved Eastern Conference featuring the return of Tyrese Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers, the acquisition of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown by the Philadelphia 76ers and the continued improvement of teams like the Atlatna Hawks, Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors.<\/p>\n Even the teams expected to be at the bottom of the conference — the Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks — are not pushovers.<\/p>\n The Magic are arguably in the toughest division alongside the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets. A slow start can easily be the difference between first and third, even in just the division.<\/p>\n Every game, every night, even in October, will be crucial to determining play-in and playoff seeding at the end of the season. <\/p>\n Looming Personnel Decisions<\/p>\n Time is ticking for the Orlando Magic. If the competition does not create urgency, the team’s financial situation will.<\/p>\n Since the addition of the apron restrictions, teams are forced to make decisions<\/a> much quicker than they historically would.<\/p>\n The second apron has become a virtual hard cap that every team is trying to avoid.<\/p>\n
