Much of the attention surrounding the Commanders’ backfield has been on the more established players\u00a0and draft picks. There are\u00a0high expectations\u00a0for the room, and the players justified that hype on Friday with\u00a0174 yards\u00a0on 41 carries, despite Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White and Jeremy McNichols all sitting out.\u00a0It’s\u00a0a crowded room, which has created debates over who the Commanders should keep, and\u00a0Henry\u00a0showed why he deserves to be part of that discussion.<\/p>\n

It’s\u00a0understandable for Henry to get lost\u00a0among the rest of\u00a0the Commanders’ running back room. Croskey-Merritt was a seventh-round pick\u00a0who\u00a0received almost immediate praise from the fan\u00a0base, and\u00a0he mostly lived up to their expectations\u00a0with\u00a0805\u00a0yards\u00a0and eight rushing touchdowns; White, the Commanders’ big acquisition at the position, is a pass-catching threat\u00a0and a solid route runner; Kaytron Allen, a sixth-round pick, is Penn State’s all-time leading rusher and has an immediate role on the team; and McNichols and Jerome Ford are veterans who can do a bit of everything.<\/p>\n
Henry, an undrafted free agent out of UTSA,\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0have\u00a0the same level of pedigree, but he does bring a noteworthy college resume to the\u00a0position\u00a0group. He became the third UTSA player in program history\u00a0to rush for\u00a01,000 yards\u00a0during his final season, despite missing two games.\u00a0He recorded\u00a02,339 yards\u00a0and 27 rushing touchdowns in three seasons with the Roadrunners, averaging 5.7 yards per carry.\u00a0His highlight performance came against Texas A&M, when\u00a0he rushed for\u00a0177 yards\u00a0and two touchdowns on just 16 carries.<\/p>\n
