It\u2019s a sad day in Temple Terrace. <\/p>\n
After months of rumors, a popular Temple Terrace Winn-Dixie location will officially close next month to eventually make way for an Aldi.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Employees at the 8837 N 56th St. Winn Dixie told Creative Loafing Tampa that the store will indeed close sometime in mid-September, depending on how quickly the current inventory sells out. Since items will no longer be restocked, the location will feature steep discounts in the weeks ahead, added the employees.<\/p>\n
As of now, it\u2019s unknown exactly when the space will reopen as an Aldi.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In 2024, Aldi purchased hundreds of Florida Winn-Dixie locations from Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers, and has since sold back nearly 200 locations to a new investor group called Winn-Dixie Co. <\/p>\n
However, over the last couple years, Aldi\u2019s remaining 220 Winn Dixie locations have slowly converted into the popular German discount grocer, with plans to transform all of them by 2027. The Temple Terrace Winn Dixie, which is less than a quarter mile from the area\u2019s closest Publix on Busch Boulevard, has long been rumored for the switch.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
Last April, a listing on the commercial real estate website Loopnet showed an \u201cALDI Excess Space\u201d available for lease where the current Winn Dixie is located, along with an Aldi logo.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Temple Terrace Winn Dixie has a 41,000 square-foot footprint, which is almost double the size of a typical Aldi, which may explain why the listing was offering up 18,958-square-feet of the space.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Aldi has already completed a similar buildout at the Armenia Avenue location<\/a>, where it only used half of the former Winn-Dixie retail space, and is currently in the process of doing the same thing with the location just down the road at 9535 E Fowler Ave., in Thonotosassa<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The 56th Street Winn Dixie first opened back in 2015 after its parent company acquired Sweetbay Supermarket, which rebranded in 2007 from Kash n\u2019 Karry. In 2022, the space witnessed a major remodel, updating the liquor store and adding a Dollar Store inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n Over the years, the Temple Terrace Winn Dixie was a local favorite, known for competitive prices, an excellent layout, a solid seafood and deli counter, friendly service, and arguably better BOGOs than Publix.
