PETERSBURG, Fla. &#8211; Months after the City of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/pinellas\/st-petersburg\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">St. Petersburg<\/a> claimed its water billing issues were resolved, residents are still opening shocking bills \u2014 and getting little to no help.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Michelle McConnell has lived in her childhood home for years, always paying a consistent $79 water bill. There&#8217;s no way I could use that much water. You know, I don&#8217;t have sprinkler systems, I don&#8217;t have a pool.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">A city inspector had McConnell conduct a dye test to check for leaks, and none were found. A city worker also came to investigate but couldn\u2019t explain the astronomical charge.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;The one gentleman that came out and said, &#8216;I can tell you right now, this is a misread. The bill continues to arrive, and the city even shut off her water once.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/water-bills-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">Pictured: Michelle McConnell.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Now, she pays $279 a month, plus late fees, just to keep her water service on, hoping she\u2019ll eventually be reimbursed.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;It was just like a loop, nothing. Just no sympathy, not \u2018Can I put you on a payment plan,&#8221; said McConnell.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">She spends hours on the phone, writing letters and visiting the office in person \u2013 all while caring for her father, who is battling cancer and undergoing treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center. If it was mine, I&#8217;d pay it and say, \u2018okay, I did it, you know, whatever, I used the water,\u2019 show me where this is possible,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">By the numbers:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">City data shows that from September 2024 to February 2025, there were nearly 7,000 water bill adjustments, including 3,285 due to meter over-reads.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Despite hiring outside auditors in March, the city said they still don\u2019t know what\u2019s causing the problem. Administrators told FOX 13 that the auditors identified errors but not the root cause.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/water-bills-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The other side:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">At a recent city council meeting in August, city officials blamed the billing chaos on last year\u2019s hurricanes. But, residents who experienced problems both before and after the storms, believe the city hasn\u2019t gotten to the root of the problem.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Earlier this year, the city council passed new measures designed to make it easier for residents to resolve erroneous bills.
