Voters chose two new candidates on Tuesday to join the Broward School Board, reelected two sitting members and left the status of one seat unresolved.<\/p>\n
School Board members Maura Bulman and Allen Zeman won their races on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
Two north-county seats were guaranteed new representation after School Board members Nora Rupert and Lori Alhadeff chose not to seek reelection.<\/p>\n
District volunteer Nicole Morst defeated college professor Sharry Kimmel in a heated District 4 race to replace Alhadeff, who had supported Kimmel. Morst had the support of board members Debbi Hixon, Nora Rupert, Jeff Holness and Sarah Leonardi.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am excited. I am humbled. I am grateful, and I feel overwhelmed with the support from my community,\u201d Morst told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. \u201cThey came out strong for me, and I\u2019m most humbled for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the District 7 race in northeast Broward, Rupert\u2019s endorsed candidate, speech pathologist Shelly Soffer, lost to nurse and district volunteer Cynthia Dominique.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am just incredibly humbled at this opportunity to serve our community,\u201d Dominque said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t be more proud of myself, my team, all the volunteers who came out to support me and gave up their time to work the polls.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said her husband and children also worked tirelessly at the polls.<\/p>\n
Both candidates in District 7 filed to run less than 24 hours before the qualifying deadline. Rupert waited until the last minute to drop out of the race.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just had to hit the ground running, but I went to every single event in the community,\u201d Dominique said. \u201cI was at every single polling site. It was important for me to show up.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s still unknown whether Adam Cervera, whom Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed to the west-central District 6 seat, will remain on the board after November: He faced four challengers, and since no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the nonpartisan race, the top two vote-getters will face off in a runoff on Nov. 3.<\/p>\n
Cervera and Roberto Fernandez III will advance to the runoff. Candidates Jessie Bastos, Makai Aline Henry and Lester Wilks Jr. were eliminated.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m incredibly grateful to everyone who came out and supported me,\u201d Cervera said. \u201cEarning nearly 40% of the vote in a five-person race is an incredible show of support, and I\u2019m truly thankful to everyone who placed their trust in me.<\/p>\n
\u201cTonight, I\u2019m grateful for how far we\u2019ve come, energized by the support we received, and ready to keep working hard and building on this momentum,\u201d he said. \u201cThank you, Broward. We\u2019re just getting started. On to November!\u201d<\/p>\n
Fernandez promised to make it a tough fight for Cervera.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really thankful to all the voters and all the volunteers who helped me get to this point, and I\u2019m looking forward to running in the next phase of this campaign into November and winning the seat in November,\u201d Fernandez told the Sun Sentinel.<\/p>\n
The other incumbents easily defeated their challengers.<\/p>\n
Bulman won against Carmen Gimenez, 64, a Venezuelan American who has previously run for Hallandale Beach mayor and Florida governor, in the District 1 seat, which includes Hollywood, Hallandale Beach, Dania Beach, West Park and parts of Miramar and Pembroke Pines.<\/p>\n
Zeman defeated Sonja Azim, a safety and security trainer for the school district, to keep his at-large countywide seat.<\/p>\n
Zeman told the Sun Sentinel on Tuesday night it was a good race.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s good for incumbents to go through a competitive election,\u201d Zeman said. \u201cI think standing in front of the voters is a clarifying experience and Sonja ran a very good campaign, and I appreciate her bringing her issues to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
