Florida Democrats nominated state Rep. Angie Nixon for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, handing a decisive primary victory to a progressive Jacksonville lawmaker who raised far less money than her better-funded opponent.<\/p>\n
Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council official who became nationally known after testifying during President Donald Trump\u2019s first impeachment inquiry. According to The Associated Press, Vindman had outraised Nixon by more than 16-to-1.<\/p>\n
The result sets up a November general election matchup against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, who was appointed to the seat by Gov. Ron DeSantis after Marco Rubio left the Senate to become secretary of state in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

But those advantages did not translate into a primary win. In a statement released Tuesday night, Vindman congratulated Nixon and said he would support her in the general election.<\/p>\n

Vindman also described his own path\u2014from arriving in the United States as a Jewish refugee to serving in the Army and the White House\u2014as an example of the American dream.<\/p>\n

The November election will determine who holds the seat through the end of that term. The race also gives Florida voters a direct choice between an appointed Republican incumbent and a Democratic challenger who emerged from a competitive primary.<\/p>\n
Moody can point to her statewide experience as attorney general and her position as the sitting senator.
