Straz Center for the Performing Arts is wholeheartedly Banksy, which could probably be taken as a compliment and as a critique. It’s self-aware, kind of annoying, and easy to talk about with anyone.

Whether he’s a brazen political activist or a bullshit privileged asshole, Banksy would likely prefer to say “and” instead of taking sides. Labels—any and all of them—are not mutually exclusive, and this show amplifies that push-and-pull tension.

There are layers to this tension, too. Much of the art in this exhibition was made for private buyers, which contradicts the ethos of street artists and yet helped to fund Banksy’s street works. And now this body of private work—more than 160 pieces—is on relatively public display in Tampa. And it’s hosted at the Straz, which hosts touring bodies of humans, not art objects.

The point of these layers is the conversation, and it’s a conversation that anyone can walk into. Banksy’s visual language is immediate and accessible—children’s silhouettes on crumbling brick walls or pop culture icons turned into apes—with a snarky, droll twist that’s often easy to see coming.

Anyone can have an opinion about Banksy, and everyone usually does.

“It’s hard to leave and not be talking about it,” Corey Ross, CEO of Starvox, the production company behind the Banksy show, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay ahead of the opening.

While this show at the Straz follows the origins and evolutions of Banksy’s sincere sarcasm, the exhibition design creates its own complementary tension.

Upon entering through the backstage of the theater, visitors squeeze through a series of rooms that are dark and densely packed with artifacts, wall texts, and posters of quotes that are precisely illuminated by tiny spotlights against black walls.

It’s easy to forget the exhibition is on a theater stage at all.

<img loading="lazy" data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="780" height="520" data-attachment-id="366695" data-permalink="https://www.cltampa.com/banksytampa_6790/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.cltampa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/BanksyTampa_6790.jpg?fit=2500%2C1667&ssl=1" data-orig-size="2500,1667" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.8","credit":"James Boone","camera":"NIKON Z f","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1785452970","copyright":"James Boone","focal_length":"24","iso":"12800","shutter_speed":"0.02","title":"","orientation":"0","alt":""}" data-image-title="BanksyTampa_6790" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>‘The Art of Banksy’ inside Morsani Hall at the David A. Straz Center for Performing Arts in Tampa, Florida on July 30, 2026. Credit: SK West / Creative Loafing Tampa Bay

One of the first spaces highlights a series of cardboard protest signs and the use of stencils in Banksy’s work. The accompanying exhibition text explains that he anonymously distributed these signs to protestors for the purpose of the protest, not to be kept or preserved as art objects. This is ephemera that was meant to exist for the movement, then wind up in a landfill.

And yet these signs are here in Tampa more than 20 years later framed behind glass.

In another space, there’s a poster stating 1.7 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water, 20 billion people live below the poverty line, and that art shows make people feel bad about the world without doing anything about it. It concludes with “Anyone want a free glass of wine?”

During an opening night preview, visitors in blazers and sneakers read it and chuckle; if they paid extra, they’ll enjoy a free drink in the VIP lounge at the end.

As visitors move further through the vignettes of Banksy’s career, the self-referential sneering softens and allows more room for interpretation—literally and metaphorically.

Part of that is because of the subject matter – works that support Palestine, say FCK PTN, and helped raise funds for the NHS during COVID—and part of it is the physical change in exhibition space. The winding, dark rooms lead to an open space with white walls where visitors don’t need to subconsciously choreograph steps with strangers.

Art spaces typically don’t want to create bottlenecks, they want to keep people moving along. While the tight quarters might simply be due to the physical constraints of literally staging a show, it adds a subtle tango of tension.

Emerging from the winding rooms also rewards visitors with a glimpse of the view from the stage: layers of red velvet seats bathed in a warm glow, glinting with gold accents. The house lights are on and it feels like a whole other world under the same Straz roof. Yet another blurred dynamic—the show and the audience share a stage, a spectacle in theater without the need for theater spectacles.

The remainder of the show covers a range of Banksy’s work and personal objects, including thank you notes from the artist to employees who worked at his installations and a painting gifted to a former girlfriend. After reading about instances where Banksy chose to withhold his authentication, it was nice to see a slice of supposed sincerity.

The view of the house gets better and better, and the show culminates with a work from Brad Pitt’s personal collection that delivers one more twist. Three sets of eyes follow visitors: one set is from the art itself, which riffs on the most famous painting in the world, and the other eyes are from security guards stationed with the work.

<img loading="lazy" data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="780" height="520" data-attachment-id="366696" data-permalink="https://www.cltampa.com/banksytampa_6806/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.cltampa.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/BanksyTampa_6806.jpg?fit=2500%2C1667&ssl=1" data-orig-size="2500,1667" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"2.8","credit":"James Boone","camera":"NIKON Z f","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1785453033","copyright":"James Boone","focal_length":"24","iso":"12800","shutter_speed":"0.076923076923077","title":"","orientation":"0","alt":""}" data-image-title="BanksyTampa_6806" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>‘The Art of Banksy’ inside Morsani Hall at the David A. While some online forums strive to discover his identity or piece together clues about his life, it’s not a critical part of the conversation. These details wouldn’t change the punchline of his practice.

Plus, part of Banksy’s whole schtick is playing the role of the unreliable narrator. Even if he were to unveil his own identity, why would anyone believe it?

One of the quotes on one of the walls is from his book “Wall and Piece”: “Nobody ever listened to me until they didn’t know who I was.” He is famously anonymous and that clearly works well for him.

The exit is through the gift shop, stage left, which offers a variety of postcards, posters, shirts, onesies, magnets, and more. After walking through the show’s commentaries on consumerism and capitalism, it felt only right to have one more chance to participate in these inescapable systems.

Admission prices vary based on day and time; at the cheapest, tickets start at $30 for students/veterans and $35 for general admission with tiers up to $100 for VIP Lounge.

It’d be cool to offer a bigger discount for students and veterans. It’d be cool to have a lottery component where people can enter to win a pair of VIP tickets.

Nevertheless, fans of Banksy will feel like this show is giving him his flowers, fans of throwing verbal rotten tomatoes at Banksy will have more targets, and the undecided will “Yes, and” their way through an enduring career that still sparks a conversation.

Pitch in to help make the Tampa Bay Journalism Project a success.

Subscribe to Creative Loafing newsletters.

Follow us: Google News | NewsBreak | Reddit | Instagram | Facebook | BlueSky

This article appears in August 13 – 19, 2026.

Related

‘The Art of Banksy’ inside Morsani Hall at the David A.
