<\/a>JUPITER, Fla. \u2014<\/p>\nA restoration project has officially begun to rebuild three mangrove islands in Jupiter Narrows, which have eroded over decades, to protect the ecosystem and preserve the area for future generations. <\/p>\n
Sue Panella, a member of the Jupiter Narrows Conservation Alliance, shared her personal connection to the project. <\/p>\n
“This is such a proud moment. I’ve been watching these mangroves deteriorate over the last several decades. I remember them as a kid when they were just so lush and so beautiful. And if we don’t do something now, they’ll be gone,” Panella said. <\/p>\n
The restoration will focus on three sections of what was once a single mangrove island, now fragmented due to years of erosion. Crews will construct natural limestone breakwaters along the channel side to reduce wave activity and stabilize the land. <\/p>\n
“That’s going to stabilize the sediments of the islands, and it’s going to reduce wave activity, giving seagrass and mangroves the opportunity to thrive,” said J.P. Brooker of Ocean Conservancy. <\/p>\n
Thousands of new mangroves are also expected to be planted as part of the project. <\/p>\n
The islands have been named in honor of Andrew “Red” Harris, a local water enthusiast who lost his life after being struck by a boat while snorkeling. His family\u2019s foundation has worked for years to protect and improve the marine environment in northern Palm Beach County. <\/p>\n
“The islands will be a living memorial, as the shoreline is restored, the mangroves grow and marine life returns. Andrew’s legacy will continue to grow with it,” said Martha Harris of the Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation. <\/p>\n
While a portion of the project is expected to be completed in the coming months, experts say the natural growth of the mangroves could take years.<\/p>\n
