The City of Tampa<\/a> announced the policy Wednesday, August 19th, following several heat advisories this week and heat index readings reaching as high as 112 degrees.<\/p>\nUnder the new policy, residents can use Tampa’s 12 city-operated public pools without paying an admission fee on days when a heat advisory has been issued. Free access is available during each facility’s normal operating hours.<\/p>\n
City officials said the measure is intended to provide residents with additional access to places where they can cool down during periods of potentially dangerous heat.<\/p>\n
Mayor Jane Castor said extreme temperatures can pose health risks and encouraged residents to take precautions, including drinking enough water and checking on neighbors who may be particularly vulnerable to high temperatures.<\/p>\n
Pool schedules vary by location, and some facilities may have seasonal closures, repairs or programming that affects availability. Residents should confirm a pool’s operating schedule before visiting.<\/p>\n
Tampa also operates nine splash pads that are available to the public at no charge, providing another option for residents seeking relief from the heat.<\/p>\n
The city is encouraging residents to monitor current heat advisories and follow heat safety recommendations during periods of extreme temperatures.<\/p>\n
Residents can also receive heat advisory notifications and safety information from the city by texting HEATSAFE to 888-777.<\/p>\n
