The college\u2019s Board of Trustees had scheduled a meeting for Wednesday morning, with the president\u2019s termination listed as the sole agenda item. But following a complaint from Alston on Tuesday in which he alleged the board was violating the terms of his employment contract, a judge ordered the two sides into mediation, The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n The embattled president argued that under the terms of his contract, the board must first make a good-faith attempt to resolve disputes via mediation, if requested by either party. A judge agreed and ordered the two parties to attempt to address their concerns that way.<\/p>\n If mediation fails, trustees will have to call another meeting if they intend to follow through on the effort to terminate Alston, who has led the college since early 2025. Alston, a former local school board member appointed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, stepped into the job with no experience in higher education aside from a stint serving as a trustee at Florida A&M University from 2010 through 2015.<\/p>\n In recent months, Alston and trustees have reportedly clashed over his communication with board members and slumping passage rates on nursing exams, among various other issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Torey Alston remains the president of Broward College.
