{"id":377377,"date":"2026-08-21T11:02:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T11:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/377377\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T11:02:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T11:02:09","slug":"elliott-museum-gives-classic-cars-a-high-tech-parking-spot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/377377\/","title":{"rendered":"Elliott Museum gives classic cars a high-tech parking spot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">STUART, Fla. \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/hsmc-fl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Elliott Museum<\/a> in Stuart is bringing Florida history to life with a collection that ranges from classic cars and early bicycles to art and stories from the Treasure Coast.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">But behind the exhibits is a piece of technology that may be just as fascinating as the cars themselves: a one-of-a-kind boomerang system that parks classic automobiles on multiple levels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">For car enthusiast Jim Serra, the museum is a place where people can appreciate some truly special rides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cThis is a 1957 Chevy. It\u2019s a Bel Air, convertible,\u201d Serra said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Serra often drives his convertible to the Elliott Museum, where car enthusiasts from across Florida come to see the collection and spend time talking about automobiles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cWell, it\u2019s kind of unique,&#8221; Serra said of the museum. &#8220;And the fact that it has so many cars on display, you\u2019ll probably get to see that later when you go inside.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Inside, visitors can see decades of automotive history, including vehicles with special ties to Florida, and even a 1931 Ford Model school bus that once transported children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">But what makes the Elliott Museum particularly unique is not just what\u2019s on display \u2014 it\u2019s how some of the vehicles are stored.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">The museum uses a robotic \u201cboomerang\u201d system to lift and park cars, allowing them to be stored on multiple levels while making efficient use of the museum\u2019s vertical space.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cThere were four of them built originally. This is the only one still online to this date,\u201d said Jim Butterworth, director of facilities for the Historical Society of Martin County.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Butterworth operates the system, which can bring a visitor\u2019s selected vehicle down for a closer look.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">As the car moves into position, visitors get a unique perspective.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201c(A) 360-degree view of the vehicle as it comes down,\u201d Butterworth said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">The boomerang is part of a collection that includes 55 classic cars, but automobiles are just one piece of what visitors can find at the museum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Jes Robinson, creative and collections director for the Elliott Museum and Historical Society of Martin County, described the place as eclectic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a variety of something for everyone here at the Elliott Museum,&#8221; Robinson said. &#8220;From baseball to classic cars to local history, to our fresh and engaging exhibits that are changing up at least three times a year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Visitors can explore art exhibits, see some of the world\u2019s earliest bicycles and learn about Stuart\u2019s history as a destination for bootleggers and rum runners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cStuart has a tradition of bootlegging and rum-running due to our proximity to the Bahamas,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Innovation also plays a major role in the museum\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Prominent inventor Sterling Elliott and his son, Harmon, helped inspire the museum and its focus on invention and discovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">\u201cBetween them they have almost 200 patents, mostly based on their hobbies,\u201d Robinson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">From classic cars and boat technology to art and the people who helped shape Florida\u2019s Treasure Coast, the Elliott Museum offers visitors a look at the area\u2019s history from a variety of perspectives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5rem 0; line-height: 1.6;\">Admission is $12 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to 12.
