Movie theaters have spent decades insisting that sitting completely still, in the dark, in complete silence, is the only acceptable way to experience cinema. And for a certain type of human, that’s fine. Great, even. But for the rest of us who’ve been quietly knitting under our jackets since approximately minute twelve of every film we’ve ever watched, that approach has always felt a little… oppressive.

St. Pete’s own Creative Pinellas, Green Light Cinema, and The Common Thread Yarn Shop & Café have heard the cries of fidgety people everywhere and decided: no more. Together, the trio has launched Craft Club Cinema, a monthly film series that doesn’t just tolerate your need to crochet during the third act. It actively celebrates it.

The concept is beautifully simple. Green Light Cinema (that’s the city’s beloved 80-seat indie gem at 221 2nd Ave. North) hosts classic films in a setup designed specifically for the chronically restless. Lower volume. Brighter lights. Lap desks and task lights provided. You bring whatever you’re currently making, such as knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, a sketch pad, and an adult coloring book, and you sit among a glorious parliament of fellow crafters who are all equally incapable of just… sitting there.

This is what’s called “ADHD Cinema,” a growing global movement that finally acknowledges what neurodivergent people, multitaskers, and basically anyone who’s ever opened Instagram during a slow scene has always known: humans aren’t always built to sit in a dark room with their hands folded like they’re waiting for a jury to come back.

And the lineup isn’t playing games. The series kicks off Sunday, August 30, at 2 pm with 50 First Dates, which makes for a bold opening choice, because there’;’s nothing like communal weeping over Adam Sandler to bond a room full of strangers clutching their yarn. September brings The Princess Bride on the 20th, and October closes out with Cocoon on the 25th. All screenings start at 2 pm, and tickets are already available online.

Craft Club Cinema is also part of Creative Pinellas’ new Creative Wellbeing initiative, designed to harness the area’s cultural community to boost mental wellness, comfort, and joy. And frankly, combining handmade crafts, beloved films, and the sweet relief of not being shushed sounds like a reasonable prescription for most things ailing us right now. It’s the rare event that could plausibly help you finish your holiday knitting by October and feel better about the state of everything in general.

Spaces are limited, so pack your project bag and grab those tickets before someone else beats you to the seat next to the best lamp.
