With the beginning of the new school year, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium has increased its staff, transportation, and supplies capacity to educate more K-12 students through its field trip and \u201cMollusks on the Move\u201d mobile outreach program.\n<\/p>\n
During the 2025-26 school year, the museum educated more than 15,000 students at over 50 schools in Lee and Collier Counties. This was the record participation and the maximum number of schools that could be served with existing resources. Accordingly, over the summer, the museum increased education staff and added a second outreach program vehicle to its fleet to allow for more coverage to reach more schools and students.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe museum\u2019s K-12 programs are an innovative way to teach about shells, science, and conservation, and to support students\u2019 learning,\u201d said museum director of education Jorden Falker. \u201cThe impact of the programs and high demand from schools and teachers prompted the Museum to make these investments, which will make it possible to educate even more students this coming school year.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
K-12 program options include:\n<\/p>\n
Guided field trips: Students meet marine life in the aquariums, explore the Great Hall of Shells, take a guided tour with Museum educators, and participate in a scavenger hunt.
\n\u201cMollusks on the Move\u201d: For schools that can\u2019t make it to the Museum for a field trip, marine biologists bring the mollusks to the classroom and provide an interactive experience of live mollusks, shells, games, and artmaking.
\nMollusks online: Marine biologists bring the wonders of shells and mollusks virtually to classrooms, including octopuses and other marine life.<\/p>\n
Most of the time, these programs are available at no cost to schools or students thanks to donors who support the Museum\u2019s giving program, \u201cAdopt-A-Class.\u201d The program assures that students at Title 1 schools have access to the museum\u2019s programs regardless of ability to pay.\n<\/p>\n
