SOUTHWEST FLORIDA (WINK) — The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is asking homeowners and businesses to register their security cameras, sparking a debate about privacy versus public safety.

The goal is to allow investigators to know who has a camera and can contact that owner to ask for video. The sheriff’s office posted on Facebook and says registering does not give deputies access to your camera.

David Bolyard has cameras around his home. He says they’ve captured people walking through his backyard, and that’s why he sees value in sharing video when there’s actually a crime.

“If something happens, yeah, I’d give my footage if it helps say somebody get out of trouble,” Bolyard said. “I’m down to help.”

However, Bolyard also understands concerns about the program.

“It kind of feels like a Big Brother situation, kind of where an eye is on you always,” Bolyard said. “They just don’t like being watched.”

People in the comments on the sheriff’s office Facebook post believe the program would evolve beyond its current scope. Bolyard says he understands not being so trusting, but says it’s voluntary and as of now he says deputies say it is like mapping.

“Especially with people’s permission and stuff,” Bolyard said. “I’m definitely down with giving my footage say it helps somebody.”

Steve Kren wants even more eyes on his neighborhood.

“More cameras, more cameras,” Kren said.

Kren says he’s seen his area get better, and he believes cameras can help keep it that way. When it comes to the privacy debate, Kren has a straightforward view.

“If you’re not doing anything wrong, you shouldn’t mind it,” Kren said. “I think that’s a good thing to have.”

The sheriff’s office says the registry is voluntary, and camera owners still choose whether to turn over their video.

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA (WINK) — The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is asking homeowners and businesses to register their security…

[14
209,211,210,7215,83556,1521
post-378656","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cape-coral","tag-cape-coral","tag-cape-coral-headlines","tag-cape-coral-news","tag-charlotte-county-sheriff","tag-law-enforcement-in-the-united-states","tag-southwest-florida
["GET
