Seminole High School, which originally opened in the early 1960s, is currently undergoing a $57 million renovation project. For principal Dr. Alana Brown, it’s all about legacy and preparing the campus for the next generations.

“It is an investment in our students, our staff and the future of our community,” she said. “Our goal is to provide students with a modern, safe and engaging learning environment that reflects the high expectations we have for their success.”

The renovation project has been part of the district’s long-term facilities plan since 2021. Construction commenced in March 2025. Pinellas County Schools expects that the effort will be completed by July 2027.

Brown added that the undertaking is extensive. Components include roof repairs, campus electrical distribution updates, HVAC ventilator replacements and refreshed classrooms with new paint, ceiling tiles, lighting and roller window shades.

The former cafeteria building has been replaced by a 11,146-square-foot dining hall that includes a kitchen, accessory storage areas, cafeteria and food pantry. Students began using the facility when classes resumed on campus this month. A outdoor dining space was constructed to “create a collegiate atmosphere,” according to Pinellas County Schools’ website.

Additionally, a new entrance will “give the campus more of a collegiate feel as well as improve parking and traffic flow.”

The front office, Administrative Building and Guidance Suite will undergo a “complete remodel” with new ceilings, floors, lighting and paint. Additionally, the campus’s exterior will be repainted to “ensure a unified paint scheme.” The arts classroom will be remodeled and relocated. A space for band and chorus performances and practices will be created as well.

Hallways and restrooms will be refreshed. Pinellas County Schools will also add “security cameras where needed to ensure the campus has complete coverage.”

Currently, construction crews are working on selective demolition efforts and installing artificial turf in the cafeteria courtyard and light poles in the cafeteria parking lot, among other upgrades.

Brown explained that the “improvements were selected through a thoughtful planning process that considered the age and condition of our existing facilities, the instructional needs of our students and staff, safety and functionality and the long-term needs of Seminole High School.”

She added that “a major priority was ensuring that the renovation was not simply about making the campus look newer, but about creating spaces that better support teaching and learning.” One of the key goals was to modernize “outdated areas” and improve “the flow and functionality of the campus.”

Brown said that district staff, school leadership, architects and other stakeholders collaborated to “identify priorities and determine how the available resources could have the greatest impact.”

“Seminole High School has a proud history in this community, but many of our facilities were designed for a different era of education,” she explained. “This renovation allows us to preserve that history while transforming our campus to better support how students learn today.”

“More importantly, our students deserve to attend a school that demonstrates how much this community values them and their future,” Brown continued. “When students walk onto a campus that is welcoming, modern and intentionally designed for their success, it sends a powerful message: you matter, your education matters and we are investing in what comes next for you.”
