GAINESVILLE \u2014 Quarterback Aaron Philo<\/a> will start for the Gators during Week 1 against Florida Atlantic.<\/p>\n

Coach Jon Sumrall said Philo\u2019s abillity to run the offense more consistently proved the difference in the battle for the job with Tramell Jones Jr.<\/p>\n

Philo, a redshirt sophomore, arrived from Georgia Tech after spending the past two seasons with new Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no surprise to that in spring because he\u2019d been in the system, and Tramell had not,\u201d Sumrall said. \u201cTramel has improved a ton, but we\u2019re able to operate the full offense at a little bit higher level right now with Aaron. So, that\u2019s probably the biggest separator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sumrall said Jones will continue to handle some first-team reps, but Philo will \u201cget the lion\u2019s share.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also will have to continue to perform at a higher level.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not an anointing,\u201d Sumrall said. \u201cThis is not permanent. You\u2019re not a starter forever because you got to keep playing good.\u201d<\/p>\n
