(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsfa.com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"http:\/\/www.wsfa.com\">WSFA<\/a>) &#8211; A homicide investigation is now underway in connection to the weekend death of an Alabama State University student, Montgomery police are confirming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A suspect is in custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">MPD units responded to the 1600 block of Interstate Park Drive shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday where they found an unresponsive woman who was ultimately pronounced deceased. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The scene is the location of an off-campus ASU facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The victim was identified by police and ASU administrators as 20-year-old Ava Walters. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">MPD said Walters is a Montgomery resident while ASU President Quinton Ross Jr., said she was a Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native who was a second-year Health Information Management major at ASU.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jalil Bivens, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is now charged with the murder of Alabama State...\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IE5SYKNAHNBAFJTL2G66P5OIQM.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/>Jalil Bivens, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is now charged with the murder of Alabama State University student Ava Walters.(Source: Montgomery County Detention Facility)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A suspect, Jalil Bivens, 22, also of Fort Lauderdale, is now being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a murder charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Court documents state Bivens and Walters were dating, and, based on a statement provided by Bivens, authorities determined that he strangled Walters to death. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The investigation remains ongoing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Walters is Montgomery\u2019s 34th homicide victim of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
