It\u2019s not necessarily that the two agree on everything politically, though Basabe and Kraft are both registered Republicans, according to state records.<\/p>\n
Instead, Kraft credited his support to Basabe\u2019s actions last year, when Kraft came close to losing his longtime condo<\/a> after the maintenance and repair fees at the building skyrocketed to untenable levels.<\/p>\n Kraft lived modestly. While thousands of people from across the world had joined him on his daily \u201cRaven Runs\u201d and many publications<\/a> had chronicled his journey, he\u2019d largely earned a living working security and forwent many of life\u2019s indulgent trappings to afford his home.<\/p>\n His longtime partner launched a GoFundMe page<\/a> to help him, and it raised 66% of its $50,000 goal.<\/p>\n He ultimately managed to keep his home, and last month, Miami Beach recognized Kraft<\/a> by renaming 3 Street along Ocean Drive \u201cRobert Raven Kraft Way<\/a>\u201d in recognition of his contribution to the city.<\/p>\n At the dedication ceremony, he thanked local officials and runners for pushing for the street designation. But afterward, he felt his message was incomplete and set to Facebook to say more.<\/p>\n In the post<\/a>, Kraft said the same officials he\u2019d thanked at the street naming hadn\u2019t helped him last year when he was at risk of homelessness.<\/p>\n In fact, he said, just one person who did.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is exactly one person in elected office who stepped up to actually help me and that is State Representative FABIAN BASABE,\u201d Kraft said, adding that Basabe \u201cpersonally intervened to stop\u201d him from losing his home.<\/p>\n \u201cHe did not do it for attention or a headline or a handshake, he did it because it was the right thing to do. He fought the bureaucracy, pulled in state and county departments and worked with my so called legal team to help me stay in my home. If Fabian had not stepped up to help me I would have lost my home. It may have even put my run streak in jeopardy.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is very hard for men and I am grateful that good men still exist and that I know one of them, FABIAN BASABE.\u201d<\/p>\n Kraft didn\u2019t go into detail about what Basabe did, and neither did the lawmaker, who called Kraft \u201can extraordinary man whose story and spirit have brought people together from all walks of life.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a symbol of resilience and hope who has inspired thousands through his runs, his art, and his heart. His honesty in sharing what he endured makes his support even more meaningful to me,\u201d Basabe said in a statement.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m grateful for his strength, authenticity, and belief in doing what\u2019s right. Miami Beach is better because of people like Raven.\u201d<\/p>\n Basabe \u2014 who last month requested an audit<\/a> of Miami Beach\u2019s finances, contracts and homelessness policies \u2014 is seeking a third term representing HD 106<\/a>, which\u00a0covers a coastal strip of Miami-Dade between Miami Beach and Aventura.<\/p>\n During the 2025 Legislative Session, he passed five bills<\/a>, including measures to\u00a0safeguard historic structures<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0crack down on irresponsible owners of derelict vessels<\/a>, while securing millions of dollars in state funding for projects in and outside of his district.<\/p>\n He is also representing himself<\/a>\u00a0against a defamation lawsuit brought by a pair of former House employees who accused him of sexual harassment. Two House probes<\/a>\u00a0into those staffers\u2019 complaints found \u201cno evidence<\/a>\u201d and \u201cinconclusive<\/a>\u201d evidence of wrongdoing by him.<\/p>\n Two Democrats have filed to run against Basabe: former Miami-Dade School Board member Lucia B\u00e1ez-Geller, whom he\u2019s accused of lodging \u201cfalse, malicious<\/a>\u201d accusations against him, and lawyer Ashley Litwin Diego, who has enlisted the services<\/a> of influential consultant Christian Ulvert.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Add a Miami Beach icon to the list of South Florida notables backing Republican Rep.
