{"id":380611,"date":"2026-08-25T12:08:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T12:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/380611\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T12:08:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T12:08:08","slug":"dangerous-for-everyone-heres-what-to-know-about-floridas-left-lane-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/380611\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Dangerous for everyone:\u2019 Here\u2019s what to know about Florida\u2019s Left Lane Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. \u2013 One Central Florida agency is warning drivers against camping in the left lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In a release this month, the Orange County Sheriff\u2019s Office released body-camera footage of deputies engaging with these supposed left-lane campers, with one in particular warning a driver that the left-most lane is \u201cfor passing only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe hear the comments about left lane drivers,\u201d the release reads. \u201cMost people don\u2019t realize that OCSO deputies enforce Florida\u2019s Left Lane Law. During stops like these, deputies explain why cruising in the left lane is not just frustrating for other drivers \u2014 but dangerous for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The video shows several drivers receiving citations, with one getting a ticket for over $160.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe left lane, you\u2019re only allowed to com into, pass a car, and then get out of it,\u201d one deputy can be heard saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">WHAT DOES FLORIDA LAW ACTUALLY SAY?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">According to the so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/Statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0316\/Sections\/0316.081.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/Statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0316\/Sections\/0316.081.html\">Left Lane Law<\/a>\u201d referenced by the OCSO, vehicles are supposed to drive along the \u201cright half\u201d of the roadway, though there are some exceptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">For example, the left-hand lane can be used to pass other cars, or when there\u2019s an obstruction in the road that necessitates doing so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">But when it comes to the far-left lane on many highways, drivers are expected to move over if they\u2019re being overtaken by a faster vehicle (unless the driver is getting ready for a left-hand turn at an intersection).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In short: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/safety-center\/driving-safety\/the-right-lane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhsmv.gov\/safety-center\/driving-safety\/the-right-lane\/\">\u201cDrive in the right lane and pass on the left.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">[RELATED: Sheriff\u2019s office vehicle seen flashing lights at left-lane driver]<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">If drivers are found to be left-lane camping and impeding traffic as a result, they leave themselves open to being fined up to over $150.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Despite the civil penalties, though, it\u2019s an issue that still pops up all over Florida. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">CAN WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Lawmakers actually tried to do this back in 2024 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/politics\/2024\/06\/18\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-receives-37-bills-heres-when-they-could-take-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/politics\/2024\/06\/18\/florida-gov-ron-desantis-receives-37-bills-heres-when-they-could-take-effect\/\">House Bill 317<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Under that bill, the left lane must be used to pass other drivers on roads, streets or highways with at least two lanes and a posted speed limit of 65 mph. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">And if it had been signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, it would have taken effect on Jan. 1, 2025 \u2014 well over a year ago. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/florida\/2026\/01\/16\/left-lane-camping-ban-heres-why-florida-gov-desantis-said-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/florida\/2026\/01\/16\/left-lane-camping-ban-heres-why-florida-gov-desantis-said-no\/\">DeSantis ultimately vetoed the proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">He provided the following reason for why he chose to do so:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">\u201cWith limited exceptions, this bill prohibits the driver of a motor vehicle from driving in the furthest left-hand lane of any road in Florida with two or more lanes and a posted speed limit of at least 65 miles per hour. Violators would be guilty of a moving violation and subject to a fine of up to $158.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">The language of this bill is too broad and could lead to drivers in Florida being pulled over, ticketed, and fined for driving in the furthest left lane even if they are not impeding the flow of traffic or if there are few or no other cars in the immediate area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">In addition, the bill could potentially increase congestion in Florida\u2019s urban areas as drivers may decide to not utilize the furthest left-hand lane at all for fear of being ticketed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 hbOwFx\">For these reasons, I withhold my approval of HB 317 and do hereby veto the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida Gov.
