WINTER PARK, Fla. \u2014 Winter Park city commissioners are scheduled to discuss a proposed project that would replace El Cortez apartments with townhomes and a synagogue.<\/p>\n

If approved, the project would allow Chabad of Greater Orlando to relocate to the apartment site on East Morse Boulevard. El Cortez currently includes 35 apartment units and nearly 20 parking spaces.<\/p>\n

The proposal would replace the existing apartment complex with five townhome units and a three-story synagogue that would also include a daycare.<\/p>\n

Planning and Zoning approved the project and is forwarding its recommendations to the City Commission for discussion.<\/p>\n

According to the staff report, the project is intended to provide residential and community uses within walking distance of downtown Winter Park.<\/p>\n

Documents attached to the meeting agenda include multiple letters, emails, and petitions in favor and in opposition to the project. Residents have raised concerns<\/a>, including traffic, although a city traffic study said the project is not expected to affect current conditions.<\/p>\n

Those in favor believe this will be a great addition to the local Jewish community and enrich heritage in the area.<\/p>\n

The city appears to be setting aside two hours during the meeting for public comment, which could be time-limited depending on the number of speakers.<\/p>\n
