Faireez now offers people for housekeeping, as it collects data to train robots

Omer Agiv sees a time coming soon when humanoid robots can do our housework, from washing dishes to folding laundry. His company, Faireez, now is placing sensors on humans hired for those chores to help train robots to perform those tasks in the 2030s and beyond.

The serial entrepreneur from Israel leads the housekeeping venture from Miami. He arrived in October, eager to expand in the US and happy to find an environment similar to his native Tel Aviv – full of sun, innovation and diversity.

Now, he and his co-founders are raising capital to augment the $7.5 million they’ve already amassed to expand their AI-powered business across the United States.

Today, Faireez works with more than 80 buildings serving thousands of residents in Tel Aviv, New York and Miami, offering a menu of cleaning services performed by experienced human personnel. Each building has a dedicated staffer who can be requested on the Faireez app to come, say, to take out the trash that day or to deep-clean an apartment every month. The staffer takes “before and after” photos that are sent to the customer, often leaving a signed thank-you note and a chocolate on the bed, much like staff in a deluxe hotel, said Agiv.

“We’re like an Uber for housekeeping. It’s perfect for Miami, because people here are focused on wellness and lifestyle,” said the CEO during an interview in downtown Miami near the Flow building where he lives and also deploys his digitally-accessed cleaning “Faireez.”

From skilled human cleaners to Physical AI

Yet human staff is just the start for the company. Agiv’s team is outfitting human cleaners with special gloves equipped with sensors and headpieces with cameras in order to record the human’s movements and collect data that can train humanoid robots.

Within several years, he expects humans to work alongside small robots that can do simple cleaning tasks. Later, when humanoids are trained to perform complex tasks like washing dishes, they should be able to work independently, “with human supervision,” said Agiv.

“In the next decade, we’re going to see humanoids become part of our lives like autos did in the 1920s. We’ll see humanoids with motor skills like a person. They’ll be waiters, work in factories, and clean homes,” he said. “I was very skeptical a few years ago, but it’s happening. The technology is evolving, as it has for driverless cars.”

He figures robots will be able to perform the tasks at a fraction of the costs of people, “making housekeeping more affordable.”

✓

Check your inbox for a confirmation email.

Seeking ‘a magic fairy’ to help with ‘annoying’ housework

Agiv said he got the idea for “Faireez” while developing other tech ventures including Weissbeerger, a company that digitized data on beer sales. The world’s largest brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev bought that venture in 2018 for $80 million, news reports said.

A passionate problem-solver, Agiv said he’d often come home from working 12 hour-days on tech solutions and find he still needed to wash dishes, a task he finds “annoying.”

“What if there’s a magic fairy you can trust, who serves your community, and who you can call to come do your dishes for 20 minutes or organize your whole house?,” he asked. He figured a cleaning service could save people years of their life spent on housekeeping, freeing up time for other pursuits.

Agiv initially envisioned people doing the household chores, but then saw potential in Physical AI, a form of artificial intelligence now in an early stage that he likens to the Internet in the mid-1990s. “Within a decade, we’ll see mass deployment of humanoid robots,” he said. “The same way you now have a car in your garage, you’ll have a humanoid.”

Faireez now works with 22 employees in the US and Israel, with Agiv and a regional manager based in Miami. Cleaning personnel are subcontracted, often through existing housekeeping companies, with cleaners accessed through Faireez paid “above market rate,” he said.

“We’re the connecting tissue, not the low-tech cleaning company nor the high-tech hardware manufacturer building the robots, but the one collecting the data for the robots and later, deploying them,” said Agiv. “We aim to digitize housekeeping and make it affordable for all.”

To fund growth, Faireez last year raised $7.5 million in a seed round led by Israel’s Aristagora VC, with participation from Longevity Venture Partners, Hetz Ventures, Secret Chord Ventures, RE Angels and NFX founding partner Gigi Levy-Weiss, among others.

Moshe Sarfati, Aristagora’s managing partner, told tech industry publication TechCrunch he believes Faireez is “revolutionizing a 1,000-year-old industry” and is set to be a “game changer in this ‘blue ocean space of residential buildings’ amenities.” That shift in housekeeping may soon feature humanoid robots washing the dishes.

Pictured above: Faireez co-founders, left to right: Omer Agiv, Chief Executive Officer; Ori Fingerer, Chief Business Development Officer, and Gil Kaplan, Chief Technology Officer.

READ MORE IN REFRESH MIAMI:

Doreen Hemlock is a journalist who worked years with the South Florida SunSentinel newspaper and before that, in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Peru, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
