Officials in the City of Tampa turned City Hall pink with lights as a colorful tribute to Dolly Parton<\/a> after the news about her passing.<\/p>\n

“Tonight, Tampa will shine pink in honor of the legendary Dolly Parton,” the City of Tampa said in a statement on social media. “As Dolly once said, ‘Find out who you are and do it on purpose.’ A colorful tribute to an icon who did exactly that.”<\/p>\n

Dolly Parton<\/a> died peacefully at 80-years-old on Tuesday, Aug. 25, after a brief battle with cancer<\/a>, according to the late musician’s team.<\/p>\n

The Country music legend performed in Tampa several times throughout the years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her last performance was on Nov. 26, 2016, at Benchmark International Arena \u2014 known at the time as Amalie Arena \u2014 during her “Pure & Simple Tour,” with Ruth Eckerd Hall serving as a co-promoter for the regional event. It was a sold-out show.<\/p>\n

The City of Tampa was not alone in honoring the late country musician. In the Tampa Bay area, politicians and local businesses<\/a> took to social media after the announcement of her death.<\/p>\n

“Truly one of a kind,” Lt. Gov. of Florida Jay Collins said on social media<\/a>. “Dolly Parton came from the humblest of beginnings and never forgot where she came from. She gave hundreds of millions to charity, put hundreds of millions of books in the hands of children, and inspired millions more. Talent, generosity, and a heart for others. A true American icon.”<\/p>\n

Parton wrote hundreds of songs, including classics like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” that totaled more than 100 million worldwide sales and more than 1 billion online streams. Parton, who plucked bejeweled banjos, guitar and dulcimers with her long fingernails during performances, was a generous philanthropist<\/a> and successful businesswoman<\/a> whose projects included a theme park in the Smoky Mountain foothills<\/a> near her birthplace.<\/p>\n

Her career was forever influenced by her upbringing as one of 12 children born into what she called a “dirt poor” Tennessee family. She started her education nonprofit<\/a>, Imagination Library, to send free books to children in Tennessee because her father, who quit school to work on the farm, struggled to learn to read.<\/p>\n
