Port Saint Lucie, Florida.<\/a><\/p>\nA landspout touched down near the St. Lucie River along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, crossed the water as a waterspout, and returned to land. In 14 minutes, it traveled more than 2 miles through residential areas of the city.<\/p>\n
The tornado first made landfall near the Tarpon Bay Yacht Club, lifting pool structures and damaging roofs. It then crossed the St. Lucie River as a waterspout for five to seven minutes before making landfall again in Bay St. Lucie, where winds of 65 to 75 mph knocked down trees and damaged homes.<\/p>\n
The storm moved westward, leaving behind fallen trees, destroyed fences, and damaged swimming pool structures before dissipating. Between 20 and 30 homes were affected along a 2.1-mile stretch.<\/p>\n
This type of tornado, known as a ground-tornado, forms from the ground upward rather than descending from a storm cloud, which makes it more difficult to predict.<\/p>\n
