Crossing guards in Martin County are navigating unpredictable weather conditions to ensure students’ safety on their way to and from school. <\/p>\n
“Right now, we’re experiencing kind of a time where they may hold the kids for lightning, is a problem,” said Lisa Haner, a school crossing guard with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. “So, in that case, we’ll just take cover in our vehicles until the kids come out and it’s safe and clear. If we see a child, we’ll get out of our vehicle and cross them.” <\/p>\n

“All right guys, go ahead,” Haner said while assisting students. <\/p>\n
Thely Murphy, supervisor for school crossing guards with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, described the responsibilities of the team. <\/p>\n
“Twenty-one crossing guards… We safely cross students to and from school, which involves some traffic. And involves some good and bad weather,” Murphy said. <\/p>\n
The challenges extend beyond rain. <\/p>\n
“At times, we feel the heat coming up from the asphalt; it’s very hot out here,” Murphy said. <\/p>\n
