{"id":383771,"date":"2026-08-28T18:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T18:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/383771\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T18:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T18:18:09","slug":"st-pete-to-review-its-flock-program-tallahassee-commissioners-vote-to-keep-their-cameras-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/383771\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Pete to review its Flock program, Tallahassee Commissioners vote to keep their cameras up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elected officials in St. Petersburg and Tallahassee both took up the issue of Flock cameras this week with varying results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On Thursday, the St. Pete City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/local\/pinellascounty\/st-pete-reconsidering-flock-camera-contract-privacy-concerns\/67-3e6a7fc9-5f6d-4fe2-8e49-c95b0933bbde\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">approved<\/a> an item requested by Council Member Richie Floyd to refer the city\u2019s Flock contract to the Public Services and Infrastructure Committee for review.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That came a day after Tallahassee mayoral candidate and City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow motioned to ban and remove the controversial cameras. His motion was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wfsu.org\/wfsu-local-news\/2026-08-27\/tallahassee-commissioners-vote-to-keep-flock-cameras\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">rejected<\/a> 3-2, following the same moderate-progressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2026\/08\/20\/who-will-face-perez-heres-how-a-recount-will-decide-seat-3-runoff\/91368695007\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">divide<\/a> that has repeatedly split the Commission on local hot-button issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">St. Pete has 54 active cameras, while there are 116 cameras set up across Leon County.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In both cases, the pushback to Flock was led by more progressive officials. Floyd is <a href=\"https:\/\/electoral.dsausa.org\/endorsement-richie-floyd\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">backed<\/a> by the Democratic Socialists of America, while Matlow has <a href=\"https:\/\/tallahasseereports.com\/2026\/06\/29\/matlow-embraces-nyc-mayor-mamdani-attacks-democratic-party\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">embraced<\/a> New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani in interviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhdfirm.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20-MHD-Florida-Politics-V1_1-728x90-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-316235\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Across the state and nationally, opposition to Flock has been bipartisan but seems to be loudest among progressive Democrats and conservative Republicans. At Tallahassee\u2019s commission meeting, Matlow pointed to statements by both U.S. Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/sanders-vows-to-introduce-legislation-to-stop-flocks-ai-mass-surveillance\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> and Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/816839-desantis-flock-off\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ron DeSantis<\/a> signaling their support for reforming use of the cameras.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In both cities, law enforcement has argued automated license plate reader (LPR) technology is a useful tool for solving crimes. St. Pete Police Chief Anthony Holloway has defended his city\u2019s use of the cameras, while Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell called them \u201can incredible tool that allows us to keep this community much, much safer than we\u2019ve ever been able to before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though St. Pete\u2019s move to scrutinize its LPRs is a win for \u201cde-Flock\u201d activists, it is not yet clear whether the review will actually lead to the cameras being removed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, even as Tallahassee Commissioners voted to keep Flock in place, they did agree to hold a public forum on the issue in the future. The Tallahassee Police Department has also rolled out a Flock camera portal where residents can access information about how the technology is being used, which the agency says promotes transparency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several other Florida counties and municipalities have taken up the LPR issue or are planning to shortly.
