CORAL GABLES, Fla. \u2014 Coral Gables police say the arrests of two suspects<\/a> in a burglary at the home of a couple killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya exposed a web of criminal activity.<\/p>\n

Coral Gables Police Department Chief Ed Hudak said the suspects targeted the Valencia Avenue home of Henry Parra, 55, and Adam Hlavaty, 42, knowing they died in the Aug. 19 crash along with five others, several of whom had South Florida ties.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese people were targeted the day they were killed in that crash, which I find reprehensible,\u201d Hudak said at a news conference on Friday.<\/p>\n

Flanked by Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, and high-ranking members of the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office and his own department, Hudak said the investigation revealed a beehive of identity theft, fraud and burglary.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have boxes of documents that could be potential victims,\u201d Hudak said.<\/p>\n

He said those boxes of documents were found at the northwest Miami-Dade home of suspects Geybert Alexander Garcia, 40, and Melany Perdomo, 24, in the 8300 block of Northwest 195th Terrace.<\/p>\n

The two are accused of stealing jewelry, electronics, documents, artwork and the couple\u2019s Porsche and Range Rover.<\/p>\n

Fernandez Rundle called the targeting of the late couple \u201creally shocking and unfathomable\u201d and part of a \u201cmuch larger scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudak said CGPD \u201ccan\u2019t rule anything out\u201d when it comes to whether the suspects had help on the inside. He said the suspects knew to go behind the home\u2019s liquor cabinet to remove the couple\u2019s security system.<\/p>\n

He also addressed purportedly-notarized paperwork Garcia\u2019s attorney showed in court claiming that the victims signed over their vehicles to him.<\/p>\n

Both a family friend and a CGPD detective testified that they believe the document is phony.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never known anyone to have an affidavit for a dead person,\u201d Hudak said.<\/p>\n

Hudak said the sheer scale of the investigation has led CGPD to work with MDSO and multiple federal agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives, to probe the wider case.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe walked into ground zero of identity theft in this area,\u201d Hudak said.<\/p>\n

That includes passport fraud, he said, leading to the Diplomatic Security Service to join the investigation.<\/p>\n

At the suspects\u2019 home, near the unincorporated Palm Springs North area, Hudak said investigators recovered 20 key fobs corresponding to suspected stolen vehicles and authorities are working to track down the owners.<\/p>\n

Additionally, investigators said they found a Ford F-250 with an altered VIN that turned out to be stolen out of Indian River County.<\/p>\n

Hudak said owing to the sheer scale of evidence discovered the investigation is \u201cgoing to take us some time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as of Friday, Garcia and Perdomo remain locked up in Miami-Dade\u2019s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on multiple charges, including burglary and grand theft.<\/p>\n

They were ordered to remain there without bond and are set to be arraigned in Miami-Dade court on Sept. 28.<\/p>\n
