The man told investigators he\u2019d driven up over the weekend to surprise his girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsfa.com\/2026\/08\/24\/alabama-state-students-cause-death-revealed-boyfriend-arrested\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wsfa.com\/2026\/08\/24\/alabama-state-students-cause-death-revealed-boyfriend-arrested\/\">Investigators said Bivens told them he choked Walters<\/a> during what he said was a consensual act last Sunday. However, a detective testified that defensive wounds were found on the man\u2019s body that were inconsistent with his story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He appeared in court Wednesday for an Aniah\u2019s Law hearing, where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsfa.com\/2026\/08\/27\/alabama-state-university-students-boyfriend-appears-court-aniahs-law-hearing-her-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wsfa.com\/2026\/08\/27\/alabama-state-university-students-boyfriend-appears-court-aniahs-law-hearing-her-death\/\">homicide detective on the case testified<\/a> the suspect had been cooperative with police, answering all questions after he was read his Miranda rights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The suspect\u2019s bond is set at $175,000.
