Judge sets bond for Fort Lauderdale man accused of killing ASU student in Montgomery<\/p>\n

A judge has set bond for a man accused of killing his girlfriend, an Alabama State University student from Florida.<\/p>\n

Jalil Bivens, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was granted a $175,000 bond Friday, according to court documents in Montgomery County District Court. Bivens is charged with murder in the death of Ava Walters, 20, who was also from Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n

Walters was found unresponsive just before 11 a.m. Sunday at an off-campus ASU facility<\/a> on Interstate Park Drive. Police pronounced her dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

Authorities believe Bivens strangled Walters, based on previous statements he made.<\/p>\n

Court records show District Judge Pamela R. Higgins ordered Bivens to remain in the state of Alabama unless granted permission by the court to leave. He is also required to refrain from committing any criminal offense and must notify the court of any changes to his address or phone number.<\/p>\n

Walters was a second-year health information management major at Alabama State University.<\/p>\n

In a statement, ASU President Quinton T. Ross Jr. said the university is mourning her tragic loss.<\/p>\n

“On behalf of the Alabama State University Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and students, I extend my deepest condolences to Ms. Walters’ family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her,” Ross said. “There are no words that can truly ease the pain of losing a loved one, but please know that the entire Hornet Nation stands with you during this difficult time.”<\/p>\n
